Puccio Roelens - Research Of Sound (Edipan SML 102)
« on: June 15, 2024, 01:42:37 PM »
My search for this album is becoming frantic now...
I'm not finding what I'm looking for since a long time already.

I'd be in need of a hi-res (but I wouldn't mind an "extra hi-res) vinyl rip of this terrific record (a superb jazz-funk suite of shockingly fabulous proportions, as I've read somewhere, and agreeing)
The flac copy already circulating is not satisfying at all, unfortunately.

Would anyone be so kind to share an existing vinyl rip or a fresh rippage please?
I know the original Edipan press from 1976 could be rare, but Sonor and Sounds From The Screen made a re-issue in 2015 and 2021 respectively.
Looks like the Sonor release is poor, I don't know actually, I've only read some comments. And I know nothing about the Sounds From The Screen release.

Eternally grateful.

Thank you guys, but unfortunately both your rips are equal, and the same I have.

I'll explain better the issue.

It's not about the spectrogram, but about the waveform.
The Sonor rip circulating has been ripped (or later edited) compressing the dynamics to gain a high volume.
By looking at the waveform, a friend would say it looks like Grace Jones haircut!
The dynamics have been compressed to gain volume and the result is that all the peaks have been cut-off

Here I attach two screenshots exported with iZotope RX10.

1 - Track 1 (Splash Down) from said Sonor rip

2 - a track as it should appear by not using any bad equalization

This is the reason why I'm asking for a new rip, or a different one from that already circulating.
Flemming, would you mind sending a link for the apm version to see if there is any improvement?

Hi Greta.

Just checked the APM version of splash down in cool edit pro (now Adobe Audition) and it is exactly the same waveform.  :(

Greta, you've piqued my interest. I have the 2021 Sounds From Screen re-issue on vinyl. I just had a quick listen with this in mind and I can tell right away that sadly this record was cut from the same "overly brickwall limited" digital master. It sounds dynamically as flat as a pancake.

I've worked on quite a few remastering projects over the years and I can probably shed some light on this....

Unfortunately starting in the late 90s there was a trend to make everything as loud as possible due to these new digital limiters that had become available, much to the detrement of the music though. It didn't matter if it destroyed the dynamics, the record labels wanted hot masters and so as a mastering engineer, you had better deliver them that way!

As a result many records were sonically destroyed in the remastering process. The original tapes would be transferred to digital and then the destruction would begin. Unfortunately the original raw transfer of the tapes (pre mastering) would usually be lost by the labels (they didn't have the foresight to keep them) so only the loud version remains to this day, and that's usually only because it got pressed to CD.

Often with smaller labels the original analogue tapes were ditched after they got transfered. So here we are 20 years later  with more knowledge and respect for these incredble recordings, but all that exists to cut a new vinyl version from are the tastelessly, overly loud mastered wav files from 200?. You'd be surprised and maybe shocked to know how many vinyl re-issues are made from files derived from a CD (16/44). I know because I've worked on some!

All to say, that's what I'm assuming has happened with this record. If you could find someone with a good rip of the 1976 Edipan version, I think that would be you're only hope in this case, as it would not have been subjected to the digital limiters that became available much later on.

Thanks for the clarification Scotch, and for offering your experience for a better understanding.
I imagined there might be such a reason, sadly.

I just have to wait until someone can provide a fresh rip from the original Edipan press. This is one of the very fav of mine, the wait will definitely be worth it.

REQUEST RENEWED!

Hi Greta,
today I have ripped the original Edi-Pan LP. The waveform looks normal here.

Have a nice Sunday!
