Sensations' Fix - s/t (1973-74) (Polydor AS 273)
« on: June 17, 2023, 10:22:16 PM »
Sensations' Fix: Masterminded by legendary Italian guitarist and synthesist Franco Falsini, they released three albums in 1974, including this special library promo, assembled from tunes recorded in the USA during the band's stay abroad c. 1973. Their style was uncannily futuristic "space rock," with an incredible sound, despite some less-than-perfect recording environments and simple Teac 4-track recorder used to make these records.

This album sound like a collection of demos, with a rougher sound and less polished approach compared to their two "proper" albums, but it is nonetheless some of the very best, most inventive library music I know.

On this we can hear the band developing their signature sound, with a theme that would end up as the first track on their album Fragments of Light. There's a lot of variety here, likely due to the music being compiled with soundtracks in mind, and we find some rather lighthearted and tuneful stuff amongst the cosmic and progressive themes. My favorite tracks are "Fall of Sensations on Earth," "Broad Mindedness," and "Vertical Motion."

It was reissued on CD as part of the "Progressive Italia Gli Anni '70" series, which is the source of this rip. I hope you'll all find it enjoyable, and perhaps leave some thoughts!

'Til next time, your man in space...

Thank you very much Tezeta!
I've always been a fan of Sensations' Fix. A great band with a unique sound.
Their first three albums are fantastic.
But I've never listened to this one. I find it really beautiful.

An interesting discovery, tezeta! However ...

... the sound is atrocious (just as that of your other two shares of this band).

It would be great to have a diligent rip of a reasonably preserved original record. As they are, these renderings are unlistenable. Perhaps the masters have deteriorated beyond salvage. But to publish these deplorable ruins in all seriousness was a disservice to the artists and to music lovers alike by the curators (if one should call them that) of the "Progressive Italia gli Anni '70" series.

Dynamic ranges are 7-9, sometimes 10. To be able to hear anything the tracks were digitally compressed to an indistinct tone mush. Avoid.

On a well-known music-related site I read that "Their albums were self-produced and recorded in the band's own studio, with an amateurish sound quality." This may well be, but the sound of these "reissues" isn't amateurish. It's simply very, very bad. I do not believe that the original records sounded anything like it. Amateurs or not. The musicians were young and not deaf yet, presumably.

What a shame. The music itself is quite nice. I like this aimless early '70s guitar+synth noodling a lot. The later reworkings on "Flying Tapes" are sonically somewhat better but utterly forgettable otherwise.

Well that could have been five times shorter a reply. I sorted through every available version of these records, and I settled on these because they were the best available. Yes, the masters were lost. "Unlistenable"? Ridiculous, especially with regards to music you've not even heard before. I would love to hear your thoughts after struggling through the "2022 remaster" of Fragments of Light which is much worse.

But once again, a thread is being derailed because of your need to complain. This kind of screed would be much better suited to a DM, where I could at least ignore the tone of it all, because I'm not being subjected to it in public.

I'd not heard of Sensations' Fix before so had initially passed this one by. But after reading @likedeeler's characteristically no-holds-barred/aggressive review I thought I'd check this out.

I must say I'm disappointed. It's nowhere near as bad as I had expected!! But I suppose I should have guessed that. Granted the quality is poor but you had warned us about this saying "this album sound like a collection of demos, with a rougher sound and less polished approach". There are some interesting tracks here. The guitar work on Wave 243 is reminiscent of a track called BART by American rock band Ruby which featured on the BBC test card Positron in the mid '80s. Many of the other tracks have an "experimental" feel about them which I usually take to mean that the musicians have got hold of a new piece of kit and are taking it out for a test run! Though often some good stuff can come out of sessions like that even if a little raw as in this case. The futuristic sound is particularly noticeable in Vertical Motion which could easily have been employed in Blake's Seven or Red Dwarf. On first listening I'd say my favourite track is Muddy Candy. Thanks for sharing @tezeta. Illegitimi non carborundum!

Well that could have been five times shorter a reply.

Not sure whether you'd be a lot happier with a review like "Music mildly interesting here and there. Sounds like recorded in a wheelie bin on a broken Walkman. Avoid."

You're being defensive. That's not necessary. I appreciate your effort to find the least bad version. But that effort was apparently bound to be unsuccessful.

How do you know that the masters were lost? Polydor has found them, at least that's what they claim on the hype strips. Though not for this one, it seems.

Try to understand that my critique is not directed at you. It's a critique of the three CDs in question. And, incidentally, of company executives who allow such train crashes to be published. It is a certainty that they could have done better. They chose to fuck it up instead, as usual. DR 7 means the music has been flatlined. It's dead. And that's precisely how it sounds. But executives don't need to strive since the "vinyl!" idiots will lap it up regardless. As long as the vinyl is coloured, that is. Or if the "remastered reissue" can be buried in a compilation destined for the rummage table, like Prog Italia '70.

I shudder to think of a sound worse than this. Perhaps on another day I'll find the strength.

But once again, a thread is being derailed because of your need to complain. This kind of screed would be much better suited to a DM, where I could at least ignore the tone of it all, because I'm not being subjected to it in public.

If you don't wish to be "subjected" to a realistic assessment of music that you put up for the public -- asking for feedback -- I suggest you should avoid doing that. How can it be that you, a grown-up, only want to hear "marvellous", "wonderful", "you're a star" and the like, apparently? As if we were in kindergarden. Let other users do that. They're quite good at it.

I did not derail the discussion. My comment was on point. The one who has actually tried to derail the discussion away from the topic towards fantasies about my needs -- is you.

How did you get the idea I were complaining? I'm not. But my comment was on all three shares at once, not just on this one. Hence a bit sweeping, not focussed on single tracks or even on one album. Apologies.

I'm glad this minor back and forth seems to have cooled as one of the reasons people like the forum is we have very few of these types of communications going back and forth.
