Looking for recommendations
« on: March 01, 2025, 04:07:52 PM »
hello all,

i hope this is the correct sub forum for my question.

Just got back from my local vinyl store and was looking for some library music LPs. Well, they didn't really had much of it.

I'm new to library music and i'm looking for recommendations for library music albums or compilations, labels or artists.

The keywords a would use to describe what i'm looking for are:

- soul/funk/jazz in the widest sense
- 70s, 80s
- melodic
- easy listening
- moods: happy, mellow or euphoric
- guitars and optional also sax

If something comes to your mind while reading this I appreciate your recommendation.

Thank you for reading :)

Have a nice day

I don’t know where to start. I’d start with compilations.  What decade are you interested in. It’s so vast, from big band 60’s to 80’s electronics.  Most of KPM is on Spotify - they cover all genres.  A couple of classics to start- Feelings on Conroy, Mindbender on Peer international.  I can take a photo of some of the comps I have in a bit. Most on Spotify I suspect.

Maybe an example describes what im looking for.

https://youtu.be/50pehj2idYM?si=u5T8A-9gkTjRWd4Z&t=2670

Minute 45. Should be included in the link.

Theres also a track called "Interstate" on this LP which i couldnt find anywhere on yt or spotify which describes it perfectly. Its not listed on discogs on this LP.

Feeling was one of the few library LPs they had in the record store, but thats not really what im craving.

I guess its more 80s related?

Gonna listen to some of the spotify KPM music now, thanks for the idea.

/edit: listened to mindbender and maybe i should rethink my keywords :D definitely more looking for 80s related (pop?) library music i guess

Explore 1985 onwards- Chappell AV series (blue covers), later Sonoton & Coloursound.  This isn't really my area so other people will know better than me.

Meanwhile, check out the two Cosmic Future Groove releases- all library music form old records so if you like a track search around that LP and label and should get you started.
Explore Coloursound and Sonoton (Mac Prindy, Claude Larson, Mladen Franko, Klaus Weiss) libraries- both on this era.
Also, it's not an intentional plug but I do live sets on YT and they are very mixed but definitely stuff of this ilk which might help you in the rabbit hole.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Cosmic Future Groove Vol 1 & 2 are great. And even more i like the AV series. Especially the light themes and more melodic, pop sounding LPs.

Gonna explore Coloursound and Sonoton next.

Found you on soundcloud. I really like the Halloween Mix. But on yt i'm not sure if its the right channel. Would be interested to discover more music through your mixes.

Cheers Tony. Many are 60’s heavy but all span the decades so you may gage to slide through for things you like.  Who knows your tastes may widen - library does that to you!! It exposes you to music you wouldn’t normally select but end up liking.
