Good stuff - thanks for posting.

But, as ever, it isn't explained that library music is an entirely British invention, and that it has its roots in light orchestral music. Indeed, the video title even describes library music as a "'70s genre." Do me a favour, please. But the makers of this little film redeem themselves somewhat by namechecking Robin Phillips. After all, without him there'd be no modern library music industry as we know it.

Yes, it was a bit light on De Wolfe for me- who basically started creating library music during the silent era.  Should turn a few more people 'on' though.

It's a nice little primer for the spotify generation I think.  :)

Agreed. Just enough to whet the appetite for the newbies, but missing just enough links to encourage deeper research, which will reveal to them an entire musical universe that's been operating behind the scenes since the early 1900s.

Finally got to watch and listen.  Found it really interesting even for someone that thinks he knows a bit about the genre.  I reckon this could do with a sequel and go into its other uses around the world.  I suspect many people who know about library music don't realize the impact it had in the UK with thousands upon thousands of tracks used for test card music, interval music including schools, TV themes, promos, trailers etc.  Also, it would be good to feature a little more about other libraries including DeWolfe, Bruton, Chappell and Josef Weinberger.

For me, I didn't care much for the samples used in rap and hip hop tunes of the 21st Century.  All, awful  ;D  If I was a composer and was informed my beloved track I'd forgotten about from the 70's was used in a rap track, I wouldn't be that impressed.

Some of the composers actively monitored WhoSampled and chased royalties.  I think John Cameron talked about this at the Q&A at the London premiere of the Library Music Film. I think some producers thought they’d never be discovered back in the 90’s but once the scene caught on people realised where the samples had come from.

I watched the video this morning. Sure, to us nerds, it has one or two shortcomings. But as an introduction to what he calls the genre of Library Music (is it a genre?) it definitely serves its purpose. What I found most interesting though were the comments which were all so positive and enthusiastic. Especially from those who were unaware of library music until watching the video and for whom it cleared a fog. More than 232,000 views in 6 days. Not bad going.
