An Interesting De Wolfe 78 Has Been Found On eBay!

Whilst surfing the web, I came across this interesting piece of De Wolfe history on eBay UK. This is a single-sided acetate 78 from De Wolfe with a track from Wayne Hill (AKA Robert Dale) named "City Of Tomorrow". This acetate is different than normal 78s from De Wolfe, as the grooves on this record are different than the usual grooves other library 78s have. This acetate also has a tagline saying "The Industry's Music Service" as well. The track on this doesn't seem to be on De Wolfe's 78 catalog, but there could be a possibility that this track may have been tape only, though I can't confirm that. I wonder if there are other Acetates that contain Tape-Exclusive tracks from De Wolfe.

Oh, this is interesting! I had a look in the 1967 catalogue, and City of Tomorrow is present, listed as a track from DW/LP 2988:



But looking at Discogs, there's no such title on DW/LP 2988:

The opening track, the theme music to The Power Game, is by Wayne Hill and is the same running time as City of Tomorrow, so it looks like you've stumbled on the original title of The Power Game theme. I'm not sure if anyone knew this before today (I didn't anyway)!

I've been meaning to get this online for ages and you've given me an excuse. Here are the tape-only tracks from the 1967 De Wolfe catalogue:

The only problem with this is it's nowhere near complete - here are the listings for the Space section, for example:

...and you'll see lots more tape-only tracks that aren't listed in the main "Tape Only" section. Annoying. And then there are some tracks that aren't listed anywhere but pop up years later - there's a track called Conveyors, originally from DW 2666. That reappears on  DW/LP 3236 in 1972 and then makes its debut on CD on "1940s Cinema 2" in 1999 - only now its joined by Conveyors 2 which is listed nowhere in the 1967 catalogue at all! I'd be surprised if there weren't many other examples...

If there's any interest, I've just gotten the idea of making a list of the known tape-only De Wolfe cues and cataloging the ones that have been reissued on subsequent LP or CD releases on the company or its sublabels. Stay tuned!
