COMPOSER INFORMATION

I have pleasure in introducing to you our Cavendish Series LP. No. 5.
For the Cavendish LP. No.5 we have tried a new format. On previous issues we have featured one style of sound and a variety of compositions. On Cavendish LP. No.5 we have varied the style of bands as well as the composition. Written by some of the top British Composers/Arrangers, the style ranges from TRANQUILLITY by Don Lusher for the sextet to the Big Band Sounds of CATHEDRAL SWING by Malcolm Lockyer.
We hope that you will find this different approach a useful addition to your Library in providing a more varied selection of material and sounds to choose from.

Side 1 features the Cavendish Six, a sextet of Hammond Organ, Trombone, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums and Percussion.
HARRY STONEHAM is the latest contributor to our 'Cavendish Composers Club'.
Harry has recently been featured very successfully on the Max Jaffa Radio Programmes, with the Quintet - himself playing on Hammond Organ. For this album Harry has written and arranged two numbers; the first called CRYSTAL CLEAR, a happy, tuneful piece with solos from Hammond, naturally, and Trombone. The second number, CHEYNE WALK is rhythmic with a Latin feel.
DON LUSHER whose 'Suspect No.1' appeared on Cavendish LP. No.1 wrote TRANQUILLITY for this side. The piece is a trombone feature in a bossa nova tempo with a Hammond Organ solo and is smooth and relaxed.
GORDON REED and BERNIE WELLS wrote OUT OF THE BLUE with a bright simple melody in a medium tempo; the number has solos from all members of the group.
RAY DAVIES whose 'Sound of the Seventies' appeared on Cavendish LP. No.4 contributed SOFT SATIN NIGHTS a medium tempo strongly melodic tune, with a pronounced rhythm.
MALCOLM LOCKYER felt he would like to write a number featuring vibes: consequently VIBRATIONS 3454 which makes full use of tuned percussion and a variety of tempos.
STAN FOSTER who wrote 'Joe's Talk' and 'Siamla' for Cavendish LP. No.4 composed two numbers for this record. The first JUST A LITTLE BIT is a catchy tune which bounces along in 4/4 time. The second EVERYONE I KNOW opens Side 2.

Side 2
STAN FOSTER. EVERYONE I KNOW has a strong offbeat feel in the true Stan Foster style. The melody is played by muted Trombone and Hammond and the solos feature Vibes and Trombone.
DON LUSHER. MICKEY TAKER is Don's second contribution - a humorous piece featuring an immaculate performance on Trombone and Cowbell!
MAX HARRIS. EARLY CALL was recorded by a full dance band. Relaxed Basie style arrangement with tight punctuation figures.
MALCOLM LOCKYER. CATHEDRAL SWING is a big band feature which drives along at a fierce pace. It features solos from tenor sax and Piano and Guitar.
SYD DALE has three items on this side - all 'Tiajuana' in style. The first is LA CALDIS which moves at a medium tempo and has solos from muted trumpet and baritone sax. The second is PIZZA PARTY a bright catchy tune. The third MEXICAN MULE is a medium tempo with a baritone sax solo.

May we convey our sincere thanks for your help and co-operation which is very much appreciated.

Your sincerely,

GORDON REED

Just regarding CAV 2, I think the 1972 date applies to the stereo reissue only, and there was a mono version issued previously.  I know of mono versions of CAV 1 and 3 with different sleeves which aren't as common as the red sleeve stereo versions.  The tracks on CAV 2 were recorded in Cologne in 1968.

I've often wondered if the Ray Davies Orchestra's Benny And The Duke LP on Pye was meant to be a Cavendish Series LP that fell through.  All the tracks are published by Lafleur or Cavendish, and Pye had already put out their own version of CAV 9, plus I remember Ray Davies saying in an interview the LP had never come out and he was looking for a copy.  Perhaps he was referring to a planned Cavendish version?
