What's the secret on custom avatars?

Okay, I've tried several things, but I can't seem to get a custom avatar to work here.  I get either broken link images or nothing at all.  What am I doing wrong? 

• I have a 150 x 150 pixel image
• I have tried jpeg and gif versions
• I have tried imgur and Photobucket hosts
• I have tried URLs in both http and https flavors
• When I paste an image URL directly into the browser window,
  the image appears, so the link is good

All my avatars on other forums are hosted on my Photobucket account with no problems.
What's the combination?

Not sure, sounds like you're doing everything correctly. If you PM me a link to the image you want to use, I can try to set it up for you of you'd like.

Thanks, Mr!  I was just going to PM a URL to you when I tried it once more, and it seems to be working now.  (Yay!)  Maybe traffic was just too heavy earlier.
