Twenty-eight years have gone by since I met Chet Baker for the first time and six have passed since the last time I saw him. He was a sad and dramatic man, his only joy was to play because there was so much sadness in him: a death wish, the devil of drugs, and the angel of music.
When I first met him he was very sweet and only spoke English but later after spending time in jail at Volterra he started to speak Italian.
At our very last meeting I saw a calm, sweet, little old man. As soon as he saw me he said: "Dear Maestro". I started to laugh and replied, "If I am a Maestro then what are you? You have done much more than I have ever done." I am very happy to link my name to his. I gave him three notes and made something beautiful out of them. The idea was mine. The creativity was his.

I first met Gato in 1965; he had just arrived in Rome. He already played beautifully, but nobody knew him.
He started working pretty soon, but only as a studio musician for RAI, Italian State Radio & TV.
I don't remember how it came that we met: I had to write and record two different soundtracks, and I hired him right away.
He was a nice, calm and sweet guy. He just looked like a clerk, with a very short haircut. At that time he didn't use to wear his well-known dark hat.
Them, years later, he got his real chance: he was requested to write the soundtrack for "Last Tango in Paris".
He dropped me a call, asking me to write the arrangements, but when the time came to stars working, he did not call me anymore. Not too much time later I got to know that, not surprisingly (!), he had chosen Oliver Nelson for the job.
The huge success of "Last Tango in Paris" was not a hit for Gato as a composer, but - I think - for Gato as a player.
We did not meet anymore since then, even because I was so busy with my own job.
There isn't much to say about the two film presented herein. The music for "Una Bella Grinta" was played by a quintet. But I have a story to tell, which is related to "Sweden, heaven and hell". In the finale, the stings have been added alectronically, which was something not far from unusual in the Sixties. I had built a sort of a new instrument: it was a 16 tracks AMPEX, with a keyboard of its own. Playing ont he keyboard, violins were recorded on each channel. It was a brand new instrument, and I had called it rather incongrously, "sarchiapone", a nonsense'Italian term.
In "Sweden, heaven ad hell", the song "Sleep now, little one" is a lullaby, and it is song by Lydia McDonald, who also wrote the lyrics for it.
Gato used the same theme to create a totally different musical situation. So different that we even changed title: "Solitudine".

What more could I say about Helen Merrill? I believe that we all know everything about her. Her voice is sensual and full of style. She swings with sensitivity and knows how to select the best songs and the best jazz men. I discovered her first record in a small store in Florence in 1954. The record had been made in N.Y. city, where she lives and works. Among the musicians playing on the record were Clifford Brown, Jimmy Jones, Oscar Pettiford and the music had been arranged by Quincy Jones. I was particularly struck byt he song "What's New". I think I must have heard it 1000 times, night and day.
I personally met Helen at RCa in 1962. She had just arrived from New York and I was very excited at the thought of meeting her that morning. I remembered her picture on the old album where she seemed to be a very lively woman. When I met her I realized that she was very different from what I had imagined. She conquered me with her simplicity and I fell in love with her instantly. I remember asking her if she had made hotel reservations. She answered she hadn't. I suggested that she come and stay in my apartment-studio where we could have worked together undisturbed. In fact it was Christmas time so it would have been almost impossible for her to find a hotel room at the last moment. We were working together for an Italian TV show. I had created a jazz show entitled "Moderate Swing" which was shown once a week on TV at 10 PM. Helen was going to sing one song on every show. I was directing the RCA Big Band and presenting each time the most important jazz musicians: Duke, Basie, Woody Herman, Goodman, etc., etc. It was a big success.
This is how our collaboration started. Besides chosing together the 12 songs which she had to sing, she wrote words for 3 songs I had composed for the cinema. The 3 songs are: "My Only Man", "Dreaming of the Past" and "Dawn".
When I met Helen, she could not speak a word of Italian. A few months later she sang "Estate" in Italian, which I believe is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. This CD comprises everything that Helen Merrill accomplished in Italy. The recordings were made at RCA and at Cinecittà.
