I received this LP a little while back - not sure what the story is with this one, but this is not the only LP with cat. no. 00103 under Edimerc. It might be something like an addendum to the other, but this certainly seems to be the odd one out of the two. Somewhat uncharacteristically, this LP features 3 full classical works, with a length ranging from 7 to 17(!) minutes. Yikes!

The A-side opens and closes with a four movement work by Olivio Di Domenico, the first movement of which immediately grabs your attention with some dramatic string movements. It is followed by a pastoral (if perhaps slightly tense) second movement, a folksy and energetic third, and dramatic fourth movement. Lovely stuff!

Di Domenico is perhaps the least obscure of the three composers featured on here - keen library enthusiasts likely being familiar with him from his collaborations with Alessandro Alessandroni and particularly Rino De Filippi - whereas the B-side opens with a two movement piece by Sergio Cafaro, whose work I have only heard in some slight jazzy tinges on the SR Records LP "Ye ye beat". This record features him in a very different, classical vein, with a work that sounds to me like it was probably written by the composer at the piano, especially the first movement. Cafaro's works unfortunately don't seem to be all that readily available, but he was by all accounts a very competent pianist, and notably studied composition under Maestro Goffredo Petrassi, whose other alumni include the likes of Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Domenico Guaccero, Marcello Giombini and Boris Porena.

The B-side ends with a single movement work by not-unnotable 20th century composer and music academic Otello Calbi, this being the only work he ever did for Edimerc's publisher Edizioni Mercurio - a bit of an oddity in his collection of works, to my eyes... just like this record, heh.

Enjoy!
