Chappell Recorded Music (78s)
« on: February 03, 2018, 04:25:32 AM »

Early Chappell records, a work in progress.
This label shouldn't really require an introduction; established approximately 1941 by Chappell & Co., the Chappell Recorded Music Library were one of the big players in British library music all through the shellac and vinyl eras, and is even still active today under Universal PPM.
The first of these 78s were released in 1942, and the latest in 1969.

Whilst the vast majority of these releases were issued on 10", 78rpm vinyl, it seems the earlier part of the catalogue was originally released on shellac. Prior to C.313, tracks were released on single-sided 10"s.
Several different sleeve designs exists for some of the same release, suggestingthere may have been at least two or three prints of some of these. Other than that, there seem to have been several changes of label design during the 78 catalogue's 27 year span, settling on the 'two red stripes on a white background' design ca. C.600, used throughout the latter catalogue. I may elaborate on label designs in further detail at a later point in time.

The tracks from C.313 onwards (all of the double-sided releases) were later reissued in chronological order on the Chappell LPC-series, in LP (12", 33⅓ rpm) format, and overview of which can be found below the 78 listing in this thread. These are seemingly easier to come by than the original 10"s. Some of these tracks were also reissued in Chappell's other series of release, including the Chappell C.I.S. Index series, CMM Mood Music releases, and the TCR Telecineradio releases, sometimes with altered titles.

As sources for this listing I have attempted to use images of the 78s themselves to the extent that this is possible, but have also used the notes of the LPC reissues, as well as a Chappell catalogue scan kindly provided to me by forum user GRM. Note that there are unforunately several discrepancies between the catalogue, the LPC notes and even the different label prints of the 78s themselves!
I apologize for any errors, however minor, that may appear as a consequence of this, and - as before, welcome and encourage any corrections. Cheers.

Just a little bit of extra info in bold:

C.397 - Cavalcade of Youth/Coffee Lounge/Liberty Boat - The Queen's Hall Light Orchestra conducted by David King/???? [same on both sides], music by Jack Beaver/Albert Arlen (Albert Aarons)
C.636 - New Horizons/Teleclips No. 1 - The Queen’s Hall Light Orchestra conducted by Robert Farnon/The Telecast Orchestra conducted by Walter Stott, music by Robert Farnon/Walter Stott
C.651 - Sporting Occasion/Girl on the Calendar – [no ‘The’] Queen’s Hall Light Orchestra conducted by Robert Farnon, music by Arnold Steck (Leslie Statham)/Clive Richardson

I was surprised to notice John Barry on this list. I didn't know he did some library. I guess it was overshadowed by the rest of his career and generally doesn't get a mention.
