According to Pixeldrain's Q&A page it says "Pixeldrain has a “hotlink protection mode”. This activates when we detect that a file is being hotlinked while neither the downloader nor the uploader of the file has a premium subscription. When this happens a CAPTCHA test will appear on the file’s download page, and the file can only be downloaded once the CAPTCHA is solved. When enough people complete the test the hotlink protection will be removed and the file can be downloaded normally again."

Pixeldrain has been having some issues recently and I think the extra security is part of the plan to mitigate slow downloads.
A free account would probably improve the download experience, though there are limits on data transfers. A paid account is inexpensive and avoids the limitations.

Yes, it's the "uh-oh, 5 people downloaded that in the past hour, do some dumb captchas" protection. I often get a Forbidden slammed into my face, Pixeldrain's bouncer does not play around.

With all the great shares lately I am the third day in freeby limit so I play the captcha game a lot

I mean, Pixeldrain is probably the best on the market right now but those captchas are a joke. When you select all the crosswalks and it says "Nah, try again" over and over where some crappy AI think a corrugated metal roof resembles a crosswalk or something or when they say motorbikes and it mistakes a bicycle but you get scolded if you pick the bicycle because it's not a motorbike and vice-versa... Oof.
