Standard Music Library (CDs)
« on: November 07, 2025, 09:07:23 PM »

London-based British CD label under Bucks Music Group and LWT/ITV.
Though I think the actual content is the same, unfortunately the titles and cover art seems to differ between original CD releases and Standard's subsequent digital reissues, so the information below has only been sourced from the CDs themselves.

Some of the earlier CDs were later reissued with new cover designs. The best-documented release in the catalogue (perhaps unsurprisingly) is Brian Eno's "Textures" (ESL 003 CD), which is known to exist in 4 different versions on CD.

The label had a few different addresses, and reissues can easily be identified as such by checking these.
The known addresses are, in order:
- 129 Park Street (last known release: ESL 001 CD)
- 14 New Burlington Street (last known release: ESL 003 CD)
- Iron Bridge House, Bridge Approach (last known release: ESL 009 CD)
- 1A Farm Place (last known release: ESL 021CD)
- 11 Uxbridge Street (ESL 026 CD onwards)

For earlier releases on vinyl, please see this thread. Subsequent digital releases (and re-releases) can be found in a separate thread here.

I started making music for films long before anybody ever asked me to, and some time before I even realised it myself. My particular musical interests (and shortcomings!) had led me into areas which I couldn't describe to myself in the language and notation of 'music' - of chord and harmony and so on - because that language didn't have words for the aspects of manipulating sound that intrigued me. I was thinking more and more in terms of texture, forms and colour - visual and scenic terms, in fact, I tried to make sounds that moved like ripple patterns in water, or sounds that felt like being inside a big, industrial city on a dark night, or to convey specific feelings of light - early sun on dew; hot, midday light; a Venetian twilight; pitch darkness. I thought too about climatic conditions: how does 'cold and dry' sound? How about a 'rainforest'? Or 'Suffolk coast, early October morning'? And I became interested in painting more abstract pictures - discovering that I could make hard edges, soft colours, woolly shapes and strong shadows, crisp surfaces with mysterious lumps.
From 1975 onwards, I was composing music for imaginary films; sequences and combinations of colours, textures, shapes, climates and atmospheres in sound. It has been a pleasant surprise to discover that this work is very versatile: it can complement not only the unmade films in my head, but also the real films of real film-makers.

Standard Music Library takes all points East of Europe and beyond as the inspiration for this latest release:
Eurasia
Eastern Music captures the authentic flavour and instrumentation of parts of Eastern Europe using flute and percussion.

Moving on to India, sitar and tabla evoke the magic, mystery and classical beauty of this vast sub-continent.

Some of the beauty, charm and enigma og the Far East is touched upon in Chinese Music, featuring authentic Chinese instruments: bamboo flute, dulcima, Chinese trumpet, 2-string violin and Peking hand drum.

Finally to Australia, a crossover of styles - authentic Australian instruments combined with Western musicology.

...Look to the year 2000 for we
Know the time is coming soon
On all sides of the earth we'll make
A toast beneath the sun and moon
We now have a reason
Millennium's near
And this is the season
When all will be clear...

CLASSIC GUITAR
GORDON GILTRAP

Gordon Giltrap represents a unique musical talent. He began playing at the age of twelve, formed a band at fourteen and made his first album as a singer/songwriter aged only eighteen.

His maturity as a serious composer of instrumental music was manifest in the Seventies with the highly acclaimed trilogy 'Visionary', 'Perilous Journey' and 'Fear Of The Dark' when the hugely successful Gordon Giltrap Band was formed. The 'Heartsong' track from 'Perilous Journey' was used by BBC Television for many years for their Holiday Programme and was nominated for the prestigious Ivor Novello Award.

Music for television and classical compositions were commissioned throughout the eighites when he returned to his first love of solo, acoustic guitar with extensive touring taking him through that decade and into the nineties.

'Complete Documentary'
provides a wide range of adaptable music specially composed with documentary programme making in mind. This CD is a versatile tool with tracks designed to compliment the key subject areas often featured, and which will accompany narration without intruding.
The clever compositions and arrangements, along with useful alternative versions, will doubtless prove an invaluable asset for productions within many genres.

'electronic' - previously released in 1969 on vinyl as ESL104

this original material has been reissued to honor the groundbreaking work and inspired talents of the late delia derbyshire (aka li de la russe) and colleagues brian hodgson (nikki st george) and david vorhaus, who were original members of the now legendary bbc radio phonic workshop, and collectively known as 'kaliedophon'. testing all the technology available at the time to its absolute limits, they created imaginative futuristic amtospheres and textures with a kind of 'sonic science', pushing boundaries even further and pioneering a new age in music and sound development. here, for the first time on CD, and in all its monophonic glory, is the album delia and company created for standard music library at the beginning of the new era.

My copy of ESL 001 CD has the 129 Park Street address, and says it's administered in the UK and Eire by Chappell Music Ltd

Nice, thanks for the addition!

So no less than five known addresses in total, then. I sure hope the new residents were kind enough to forward their mail!
