Thanks for your input likedeeler. It's always good to get the view of an experienced tecchie on things like this. Just one thing, my comment wasn't incorrect. It actually correctly addressed the issue of changing the file extension name from MP3 to FLAC when an audio file is edited which was the purpose of the discussion. Your point about degradation of data when continually saving a file in lossy format is a slight distraction which was not the main issue here. Having lived through the era of cassette tapes and VHS video I'm aware of the issue of loss of quality from making copies of copies. In a similar way this also applies with repeated editing and saving of lossy files. I agree with what you say but this was a separate issue which was not part of the discussion.
