Following on from the previous topic concerning Mozart Edition titles that have helped or managed to, transform trade test tapes into lossless, I've been busy looking to find other titles on this label which will help complete other trade test tapes and now, humbly request if any of the following are available to share;
ME LP 005 - Cliff Hammer And His Golden Spinet/King Mauna And His News Sounds (Featuring Hawaiian Guitar)/Franco Chiari Jazz Quartet/Leo Silvestri And His Music (Thanks Retronic)
ME LP 007 - Detlef Rath And His Orchestra/Walt Peters And His Orchestra (Thanks Retronic)

Any and all responses are gratefully appreciated.

I can probably help with these and more than happy to. Not at home today but do have all those on vinyl. Those that ripped I can post up in a couple of days.
-
Hi John, I can only help with one of these, and reckon Retronic provided the rip anyway, so one less for him to do. I'm either missing or have the others as lossy files. I'd be really happy to know what tapes you complete with these. i've been a bit slack with look at the tapes missing, so would be interested in any completed tapes you could provide.
MELP 034 - Robbiani & His Music, Georges Chorafas & His Music, The Stuff Combo Sound [FLAC]

Thanks for this one, Tony. It's one less that Retronic has to deal with, at least! ;)
I'm in pretty much the same situation as you. I've lots of tapes in lossy mp3 format that I've had for years, with only a few lossless upgrades among them. Using Discogs to look up the albums the tracks are from is a Godsend, and it's surprising how many tracks come from the same albums within each tape. Which is kind of understandable, when you think about it. It'll be nice to be able to have upgraded versions to compare.

Many thanks, as always. I look forward with anticipation to any you provide us mere morals with! ;) :D

Unfortunately those you requested, John, are the same gaps that I have save for MELP 034 which Tony has now provided. I'm afraid it looks like it all falls to you Retro to save the day as always! In your own time though, ha, ha!

Oh my goodness, Christmas has come early! Thank you so much Retro. I can't wait to give these a listen.
-
I’ve ripped another 4. Will edit later in the week 😉
-
BTW can someone explain what these tapes are? Are they like Test Card tapes? And regarding Test Card tapes what is the score with those? I know they will have existed as a list of tracks played on TV before, in between and after shows but I never really understand where these list exist for people to access. Is there a TCM online club where all the lists are available? Please explain ‘For Dummies’ style to help me understand the whole thing please! 🙂
-
Hey Retro
The Test Card Circle has been around for years. I’ve been a member on and off and recently took out another yearly sub. Within their website, they have a database of music used compiled as ‘tapes’ similar to what Channel 4 and S4C used.
Annoyingly, some of the most information provided regards composers and / or titles were incorrectly logged. This seemed to be intentional to prevent mere mortals like ourselves to track down.
I provided a zip file from an export on the TCC a while back and helped others with the cue sheets that have been compiled by TCC members. These compilations featured music from Mozart Editions, Wilson Editions, Apollo Music, plus lots of other libraries featuring German composers. Prior to the last overnight Ceefax pages finishing, there were several compilations from Funtastik Music cds. I know John_Fred for one is keen to reconstruct these tapes and replace either existing mp3 copies or off-air recordings with lossless files. I’ve done a few myself but it’s incredibly time consuming. The albums that John has requested will help towards completing a couple of tapes / compilations that feature some tracks from those albums.
So in regards the 'Positron' tape, that ran for a couple of years from 1985, this featured tracks from Mozart Editions. That lead track features on MELP091 (although not an album John needs). That tape also used other tracks from that album plus a number of others including 069 etc etc. Another tape 'Well All Right' also uses a few Mozart Edition albums.
Hope I’ve explained that a little without sounding condescending.
-
You won’t sound condescending 🙂 Thanks.
So the names given to the tapes- are they on official lists or a names given by fans? Does anyone have scans of lists?
-
Here’s a set of cue sheets for BBC Test Cards which Tony shared a while back: pixeldrain.com/u/NkmSi5iP
The title of each tape is usually taken from the title of the first track.
-
You won’t sound condescending 🙂 Thanks.
So the names given to the tapes- are they on official lists or a names given by fans? Does anyone have scans of lists?
The names given to tapes are after the initial track name. The tapes usually comprise of a compilation from different LPs, some from the same library and some from a variety of libraries, all lasting for either half an hour or approximately 1 hour in length. Later into the 90's and beyond they would often just use tracks from the same album but in a different order. Some of the Funtastik derived ones are examples of this. Unfortunately, some tracks were given alternative names as well as the artists by the music agency responsible for supplying these tapes, (for whatever reason), meaning that the records of the recordings are erroneous to say the least. Getting hold of the original recordings and then matching them up to the trade test tapes helps to identify their true names and artists. The problem is getting hold of the original recordings, as without them, it's impossible to identify them, unless the information is made available elsewhere.
The lists of tracks on tapes were painstaking put together by the Test Card Circle and made available to their members. Presumably, so they could put their own versions of tapes together for themselves, as well as help out other members who would share tapes.
-
Thanks for the tracks John, does anyone know if these tracks appear on Nature Trail or Looking Around please?
-
Thanks for the tracks John, does anyone know if these tracks appear on Nature Trail or Looking Around please?
Looking Around. Other tapes which the LPs provided so far affect are:-
High Stepper
Nostalgia
El Pizzicatango
Don Pedro
Holiday Highway
Apron Strings
One Of A Crowd
-
Also worth noting Retro, is depending on what version of the files have been sent, they may need the .doc extension added to make them readable in MS Word. From memory, this list also provides what ITA, ITV and Channel 4 played as part of their test card music.
-
Well if nothing else this topic has flushed out all the Test Card fans. Though strangely not the aptly named member @testcard! ;)
-
Thanks for the latest additions Retro...really appreciated!

Thanks you for these latest ME shares, Retro. And it's really nice to know that you're enjoying them too.
-
Thanks, once again, for providing these titles for us all, Retronic! Outstanding, as usual.
They really knew how to pick 'em when selecting tunes for the test card, back in the day. They've certain stood the test of time. 8]
ME LP 005 completes both High Stepper and Nostalgia tapes in lossless. With contributions to Highland Holiday.
ME LP 009 completes the aforementioned Highland Holiday, with contributions to Nature Trail and Magic Potion.

Thank you so much Retro :) :)

Are there any tracks with unknown source, ie, just a track band, no composer or LP named?

Number 05!...and Number 09!!...really nice Retro!!!...THANKS!!!!

Others ripped. Can edit tomorrow.

Wonderful, thanks a lot for the shares Retronic. :)
-
Are there any tracks with unknown source, ie, just a track band, no composer or LP named?
There's a number of unknown tracks within some trade test tapes, (or at least in the ones I've managed to obtain), that the title and/or artists of which are unknown. They're mostly off-air recordings, so again, without having any reference it's hard to pin them down, unless you're lucky enough to just happen upon them whilst getting hold of albums that may be associated with the tracks around them on the tape. I say, 'may', but that's never a dead certainty. Some odd tracks really are quite obscure and may not even come from the same libraries. The Test Card Circle have done a fantastic job of tracking most titles down, but there's always the relative few that seem to stump even those in the know. I'm by no means an expert of this. In sure there's others on here who may know a bit more about the subject than me. :)

Not your fault John. With two Mozart Edition topics running alongside each other we're all finding it a bit confusing I think. :)
-
Happy to continue posting the others on this one thread.
-
I agree Retro.
-
MESLP 075 - The Sound and the Voices
I don't think this one is on Discogs and I didn't have a rip of it before doing this yesterday so is it a forgotten gem? It's a minor gem, mind, but still appealing, comprising of covers of well known songs of old with nice 70's wordless vocals. It is very likely the Mike Sammes Singers so makes a nice companion piece to CAV 10 - The Cavendish Chorale. Then we have a blue eyed soul crooner on 'How Long?', that I love. We're very used to vocal tracks on De Wolfe and to a lesser degree KPM but I love it when vocal tracks turn up on other labels like this and Boosey & Hawkes.
More groovy wordless vocals to cap off side one to the 'swing your pants' 'Zum Gali Gali'.
The B side is Sam Fonteyn in jazzdrama mode ending with another vocal track that sounds like it belongs on CAV 10.

Thanks for these Retro. You are right about 055, John (john_fred) requested that in another thread. There is a pic of the album cover, but I couldn't see a link to that album. Having just spotted that I missed 080 and 075 that you kindly uploaded as well.

Thanks again, Retronic, for these 2 albums! I instantly recognised, 'Sailing By', by the Perry/Gardner Orchestra. Used by Radio 4 prior to the shipping forecast for years!
It also adds one lossless upgrade to the Devil May Care trade test tape.
-
Thank you Retro,
I like this label every day more...

Thanks you very much Retronic and have a Merry Christmas. :)

It was John_Fred at the beginning of the month (https://librarymusicthemes.com/index.php?topic=7518.msg52388#msg52388) though I suspect the usual suspects (me, Tony etc) will appreciate your making 055 available to us if you could.
And thanks, as always, Retro for your generous, hard work in sharing all these ME albums. Merry Christmas to you and all other LMT members.
-
MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone whatever you are doing, whether solo or with others enjoy the day and do things you want to do. Here’s to another year alongside one another, bumbling along and listening music in between life’s treasures, pleasures and strifes. This is still a place I enjoy visiting, 11 years on.

Thanks for 055, Retronic!
This album helps provide lossless tracks for Small Town, Prague Elegy, Looking Around and Nature Trail trade test tapes! ;)
I wonder. I know all of these that come under the ME. LP label were recorded in mono, whereas those under MES. LP are in stereo. And yet, I have mp3 versions of many tracks from the ME. LP titles, (plus a few in lossless thanks to compilation CDs), that are in stereo. Obviously, the stereo versions existed at the time of release, but where do they come from?
-
Thank you for sharing MELP 055 Retro.
-
I think sometimes there were stereo versions available on tape, by request. Could they have been recorded?
-
I think sometimes there were stereo versions available on tape, by request. Could they have been recorded?
I suspect when the TCC were putting the trade test tapes together that they had access to the stereo master tape recordings, (which were stereo), whereas the original LP, being from the late 60's - early 70's era, (when stereo wasn't the default standard that it would become), they decided to play it safe and transfer the tracks onto vinyl in mono, to allow a more universal use. If that is the case, then we may never get hold of lossless versions in stereo unless they become available.

-
Thanks once again go to Retronic for providing us with these gems.
Not all these albums contribute to trade test tapes, but they do provide many tracks akin to those played on the test card, which is never a bad thing! ;)
MES LP 069 and ME LP 018 do provide one track a piece for Positron, though.

This time, MES. LP 102 helps with tracks from both Looking Around and One Of A Crowd.
Thanks again for the time and effort to bring these to us!
-
No worries. It’s been quite relaxing editing these while off work.
-
Big thanks again Retro for these albums. Just to put this into perspective, as an example, MESLP 103 was provided previously (sorry can't remember who provided the rip). I've attached two versions of it. First one in MP3 and second in lossless. Now whilst I appreciate there is an argument of what format is better, listen to the overall difference in a new rip. The first one sounds awful. It's not down to it being an MP3, it was just a poor rip. The point is, with Retronic's fresh rips, those that have awful copies of previous rips can quickly replace with a fresh rip. Again, many thanks.
Original rip provided by ??? some time back:-

Retronic's Rip:-

I checked one of these against my own older rip and I have dropped the volume on these but it’s easily to amplify them back up. I was recording them more loudly before but I think they sounded slightly off in louder places. These have probs let never been played and have also been cleaned so it’s a good chance to digitise them.
-
Thank you very much again Retronic. Great shares. :)

Holy cow! 7 more orange beauties.

That pretty much sums up my gaps, too I'm afraid. Though it looks like there are 8 albums you have which I don't. Any chance you could share them - please? They are ME(S)LPs 38, 47, 54, 56, 58, 90, 98 and 109.
-
If we're going the completist route in lossless, then Dr.Giggles list is pretty much the same for me, with a couple of exceptions.
MELP 039 and MESLP 114 I only have in mp3.
The 200's, I've only got 205, 207 and 208.
Obviously, if anyone has any of the missing in any quality, but preferably lossless, then I'm sure there's many who'd appreciate it. As always, there's no mad rush for any of them, though.
Any responses are greatly appreciated. ;)

Here's 201 in FLAC, John.

Thanks Tony. My last post suffered from fat fingers! I was after MELP 039 not 0038. Do you happen to have that, please?

MELP 047 - Earl Sheldon [MP3 & WAV] - For some reason side A is WAV and Side B is MP3 - Can someone upgrade ?
There is an identical version of 'Round About Midnight and Take That by Earl Sheldon on Europhon ELP 602 (previously shared in FLAC on LMT) if that helps. Though I know we've been warned off recreating albums in the past.
-
These ones I already have ripped:
MELP 011 | pixeldrain.com/u/7xnTiYAh
MELP 014 | pixeldrain.com/u/f9Acjm1e

MESLP 107 | pixeldrain.com/u/2ZKz9bHM
I don't have 27, 85, 203,204 or 206 on vinyl

Thanks Retro, that's my Sunday morning taken care of listening to these as I don't think I've heard them before. Have you got a vinyl copy of 047 you could rip to help out my dodgy recording of it ? No rush for this one, and thanks in advance.
Also, double checking my Mozart albums, I don't appear to have a lossless copy of 024, could anyone provide a new link as I know it's been shared before. Even my folder says FLAC but they are all MP3's so I've made a balls up somewhere.

Course 😉

I have, but only an MP3 version. Hopefully, a lossless version will surface..

Wow, 5 new never-heard-before orange beauties.
Thanks Retro!

Thanks Tony. For someone whose recorded musical experience started out with Shellac 78s in the 50s an MP3 is absolutely fine for me! :)
-
a very big thank you to Retronic and Tony, you made my day :)
-
Thanks once again to Retronic for supplying more previously unobtainable LPs. ;)
Only one of these titles has any trade test related tracks on it. That being MESLP 067. The tapes affected are One More Swing, Nature Trail and Looking Around. But, these have already been sourced from elsewhere, thanks to various compilations. However, it's always good to have the, 'original!' :D
-
Thanks for these five latest additions to our Mozart Edition armoury, Retro. Where would we be without you?!!

Was downloading from a user on Soulseek some Mozart Edition albums, they were in wav format, unfortunately though it looks very much like they have or somebody has upsampled them from the original flac from here I'd imagine to wav, but they upsampled from 44,100 to 48,000 which only makes the file size larger and the frequencies higher than they should be, this was the result from Audacity and the Lossless Audo checker.
If someone wishes to burn an audio CD from these resulting files at 48,000 is impossible, they have to be 44,100, ok if they are originally ripped at 48,000 then that's fine as you can decrease from 48,000 to 44,100 but not increase from 44,100 to 48,000 as it will not make the quality any better.
I'm lucky that I can burn flac files to CD, but they need to be in 16bit & 44,100 in order to do so.
You never know the quality you're receiving on soulseek unlike on this marvellous site.
-
Big thanks to Nidostar for 24 and Retronic for 47 !
As for Soulseek, agreed. It's definitely hit or miss. Most of the lossless albums out there are genuine, you just need to remember the user names to look out for trustworthy rips. The albums that I share are either my own or what has been shared previously on LMT. I haven't been on there for a while, but feel free to have a look around when I'm online. Same user name as here.

I hope it's ok to resurrect this topic, but there's a title within the Mozart Edition label that, despite not having any trade test tracks within it, would be useful to have.
that title being MELP 027 - Robbiani And His Music/John Wallis And His Band.

If anyone can share, I'd appreciate it. :)

I don't have this either..
