has anyone got a chance to check this book yet?
anthology.net/book/david-hollander-unusual-sounds/
i didn't know it existed before tonight, and just ordered a copy.
-
Great find, roope! I just ordered a copy as well :)
-
Interesting! I wonder how none of us had heard of this before.
-
Wow. Worth a punt.
-
Yes, really nice catch Roope. Thank you.
-
Thanks for the tip! I just ordered a copy.
-

Hope mines here tomorrow. Looks good!!

roope...kudos for learning of this book! Thanks so much for the alert. I ordered it immediately via Amazon at a handsome discount and it arrived yesterday.
It's 332 pages and I've thus far gotten up to page 30. It's jam-packed with rare photos and album covers (lots of color in this book!) and composer commentaries. Company histories are included and even gets granular in that we get to read specific composition recollections such as Keith Mansfield and FUNKY FANFARE.
The author, David Hollander, is a former child actor whose passion for library music took him Europe and into the bowels of some of the extant companies. There is an excellent foreword by the late George Romero that was penned in 2016.
It's an exciting book and I'm looking forward to reading every word and marvel at its photographs. Clearly a labor of love as I can't foresee this ending up on a bestseller's list. Thank you David Hollander!
And a second shout to roope for the heads up.
-
Price dropped to less than £30 on Amazon. I bet this is selling more than they expected (us lot for a start).
Mine came too. Looks great.
-
Am awaiting mine.
Have a feeling I met the author at the Utrecht fair a couple of years ago (unless there’s another library book in the pipeline).
Looks to be a step up from the pretty Trunk book, which is more for the coffee table.
This certainly seems to be the year for library music with the film set for release very soon.
-
I ordered mine for 53€ on Amazon. I still have to wait more than a week..
-
If you're in the UK, can be had for 34euro @ Bookdepository

This pretty much sums it up. I've gotten through about 200 pages so far. Hollander definitely has a bias for the electronic library releases, which tend to get more commentary and visual highlights in the book.
Also, he admits up front that the book is weighted more toward the UK labels than other regions. That's understandable and fine by me.
-
I've read it. He creates a smooth and natural flow between labels and composers of something that wasn't that linear, with labels operating at the same time all over the world.
-
just heard about this and was coming here to post about it but glad to see roope was already on top of it. ordered mine already for the hefty sum of $40 :o
-
My copy arrived few days ago. A bit more expensive compared to other countries, but it's ok. An exciting and exhaustive book.
-
There is a short interview with the author here in case anyone's interested - https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p069jr3z (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p069jr3z)

Cool. Thanks.

Looks fascinating! For a chapter on Daniela Casa this might very well be worth a purchase for me.
Anyone have any more thoughts/impressions on this book down the line?

Wow, just had a look at the book on soundohm - it's totally gorgeous! I need to get this one, especially for the chapters on Joel VDB and Daniela Casa.
That nice little interview by BBC really whetted my appetite; David H. knows his stuff!
Any news about the release of the 2LP library sampler curated by Hollander which he said would be out by the year's end?
-
Thanks for the tip! I've just ordered this, too, even though it may take months to get to China. The Table of Contents is highly arousing.

It was an enjoyable read. Many of the chapters are very short though, as the most of the pages are filled with pictures. Still there was more to read about library music than anywhere else before it.. It was like an introduction. Also because the focus has not much surprises, it targets mostly obvious labels and authors.
Most of the interviews were fun and inspiring to read and full of exciting details, like the descriptions of the British recording sessions or Janko Nilovic's contract on MP2000.
-
I wholly agree with Roope. An absolute enjoyable read, great to have many pictures. And the most interesting parts are definitely the interviews.
-
Thanks for your comments, Greta and roope. As an aspiring author/collagist myself this book seems perfect, so it's definitely going on the wishlist. 8]

Finally ordered a copy of this. Can't wait to read it! Also ordered the revised "The Music Library" book, despite having the first edition... :o
-
Anthology yesterday announced a CD/LP/MP3 release to go along with the book - shop.mexicansummer.com/product/unusual-sounds/
Looks like a nice collection of tracks.
Nevermind. Ninja'd by Milliondollars in the reissues thread. :)
-
I enjoyed the book very much, although I wish it would be a bit more in-depth. As other say, the interviews are the best bits, however the KPM chapter understandably pale next to Oliver Lomax fantastic book. I was also a bit disappointed by the amount of pages dedicated to movie posters and lobby cards. Why not use that space for more album sleeves?

Welcome to the forums! Great review! Love your comparison with Panini sticker albums. I had those when I was a kid, and your observation is spot on! ;D
-
Welcome, knightrider. Thanks for sharing your review.
Wish I could be in London for the big event.
-
Hi Knightrider, welcome aboard.
Nice to read your review. Thanks.
-
Looks great, I'd like to get a copy.

I went a little crazy this weekend. Muff Crazy, as it were, is its own special brand of Crazy... :o
Sunday I ordered my copy of Unusual Sounds. It's expected to arrive today. We shall see :)
I was able to purchase the 2016 revised edition of The Music Library. But I've always felt bad that by the time I got into Library Music in 2011, I was too late for the first run (2005) of The Music Library.
That all changed Sunday when I found a pristine used copy, including the original CD, of this 'un. It's expected Friday.

Finally, I also purchased the new book by Vocalion Books. That's expected to arrive anytime now.

I've totally blown my November budget. I'll be eating lotso rice & beans the rest of this month. But that's ok because now I've got groovy Library Music and Library Books (pun intended) to sustain me (while I go hungry). ::)
But who can think of food at a time like this? I'm so happy!

All very fine purchases, Muff. I'm reading the Vocalion book right now. Finished Unusual Sounds over the summer...
On the old board I posted a full-color PDF scan of that first Music Library book (2005), did you get it back then? Still, it's always better to have the real thing.
-
Looks like the accompanying soundtrack has been posted out now too :-)
-
Mood Modern on Vocalion is soooo good! Finally a lot of well gathered library music history to read!! This is something I was hoping for after reading the Unusual Sounds, which works more like an introduction (with a lot of juicy details though). I don't mind watching the images of these beautiful albums though, but I'm looking forward to see more deep going books like Mood Modern on different subjects and approaches. Many of the people involved in 20th century's library music are still alive, so I hope there will be more projects to collect their memories.

Hi Stack. Sorry I'm so late in responding. I always feel like I'm going to take a "peek" inside LMT and see what's doing. Before I'm even aware of what's happened, I feel like I'm on the losing end of a fight with some Giant Octopus and I'm just getting sucked in!
Picture LMT as a Giant Octopus. Have fun with that mental imagery, Freudians!
So anyways, I did get your .pdf scans of the original Trunk Music Library book. But being of the True Nerd Faith, I just had to have my own copy. But not just any over-priced copy would suffice, I had to find a bargain commensurate with my pauper status. And I did! Muahahahaha!
I've still got a couple of mothballed copies of that original .pdf file you shared with me. That way, the next time somebody else needs a copy I can zip it over to them and make someone else's day.

OMG!😍 Thanks so much for letting us now! I have both "the music library" editions by Fuel Publishing, see
http://fuel-design.com/publishing/music-library-2016/
but news of "Unusual Sounds" hadn't reached me yet. So yes, very much appreciated.

I've been interested in this book foor some time now, but it's always too spendy when I check the price :( I'd really love to get some inside info on some of this music, always so elusive. Maybe someday.
