Cavendish Archive series (Lossless)

Launched in the late 60s as a series of Boosey & Hawkes production music LPs, Cavendish became a fully fledged library label when Boosey switched to CDs in 1987. It later became an imprint of Imagem Production Music (BooseyPM's new name as of September 2010), alongside Abaco Music Library, Strip Sounds, PPM and the Boosey & Hawkes Classical Library.





The first handful of Cavendish Archive albums are remastered versions of older Boosey & Hawkes albums.

SBH 2997 = CAVA 01
SBH 3043 = CAVA 02 & 03
SBH 3049 = CAVA 04
SBH 3063 = CAVA 05 & 06
SBH 3074 = CAVA 07 & 08

The rest seem to be compilations from older Cavendish and Boosey & Hawkes releases.


Fun fact: On CAVA 10 - Fromage a la Funk: Fromage, track 4 is the theme music to a very well-known internet meme from youtube.  If you've been paying attention to youtube in the last decade, you're probably quite familiar with this tune.

Most of these are not on discogs and they came completely untagged.  Rather than spend the next week pulling my hair out tagging these track by track, I gave them some basic tags like track names, album names, track numbers, but the artist and albumartist fields are empty.  Those that are on discogs (a few are re-re-issued CDs) were tagged properly. #34-68 were tagged from Cavendish, they went full bore with the tags actually, I had to clean up their excessive tagging lol.

There a few wrong tracks on CAVA 11 when compared to CAVCD 92B

Someone screwed up at Cavendish there on CAVA0011 as 1092 is correct I believe. Sam Fonteyn - High Voltage is in fact just a repeat of Trevor Duncan - You Were Right I Was,  total bloody shambles.

However Blackwatch the last track on your posting of CAVA 0011 appears to be wrong, as Extra Energy should be a 28s track as this matches on both the references
above, I don't recognise the track you have in it's place, perhaps someone could enlighten me ?

"Extra Energy" and a few others here should be added to Boosey & Hawkes SBH 3049 (CAVA 04). However, versions of Windrush, Pensativo, Smile Of A Stranger, and Evensong on the CD version are without the wordless vocals

Go ahead and click play on that track on their site also.  The track that plays is a 3 minute track, not a 28 second track.  They either have mistyped the track length or have mislabeled the file on their server. 

I'm gonna chalk this one up to either incompetence or stupidity.  I made a post on the last LMT site about some problems I found with these company distributors and some of the responses I got back from others with studio access was that this is something to be expected.  They have young IT professionals and college grads working for them that don't know the back catalog and don't know how audio fidelity and compression work.  The entire JW archive on Tele Music's servers are .wavs decompressed from 128kbps mp3 files, for example.  In trying to make sense of the tagging on the Focus catalog, I found numerous typos, people's names misspelled, album names misspelled, stuff like that.  As far as the Cavendish stuff goes, it seems to me that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.  Not to mention the choice in bit depth.  These albums are originating on CDs.  I don't know if they have the master recordings back there and are working from those, but 24bit seems a bit much for CDs.  Although it isn't padding, wavelab's bitmeter does show all 24bits are being put to use, so this is probably unfounded on my part.

I don't have any solid answers for you, I wish I had a better understanding of the back catalog myself.  I'm still fairly new to this scene.  I know that's no answer, but in 6 months time it seems I have attempted to cover the same ground many of you have taken a decade or more to research.

It's quite interesting to hear these alternative versions, though I miss the singer - I wonder where she's gone, and whether B&H still have the tapes of the version with her overdubs?  It's probably my favourite B&H, this one.

Thank you also to Dick Turpin, Lord Thames and Stack for the mini education in re the Boosey back catalog workings. It's a little out of my depth, but I've also been largely unexposed to the Boosey catalog aside from SBH.
