Where's Scooby Doo when you need a mystery solved?
Woof!
As Muff observed, the CDs actually read "The BMG Production Music Library on RCA label"... though this has been cropped out of the digital release images, which - incidentally - is why they look so stretched.
- If similar to their antecessor, the CDs booklets are actually quite informative with regards to original dates and such.
RCAL is the CD-era RCA (Original Cast/Italiana) library output, picking up c. 1990, at the end of the SP 10000s, after RCA had been acquired by BMG -but before BMG became BMG/Zomba and ultimately Universal Music Publishing Production Music. I'd guess it ran into the late 90's, when the next CD series takes over. Like the late SP 10000s, these were produced by Alessandro Micalizzi (and father Franco).
The catalogue is a mix of previously issued cues from the SP 10000s and 8000s, some previously unissued cues, and cues that originated from scores to contemporary or near-contemporary Italian TV and film productions. Annoyingly, the reissued cues have all been retitled, and as this is the case with the latter "Score Music Series", I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the reissued tracks are also misattributed.
The series is succeeded by the "Score Music Series" (BPM), which reuses previously issued cues from the SP 10000s, SP 8000s and RCALs (also retitled), some previously unissued cues.... and so on and so on.
A full reissue key for both of these CD/digital series is in the works, and has been for a while.
couldn't this acronym mean RCA-Library label?
Hadn't given that any though, but yeah I think that's probably right. "RCA Label" or "RCA Library"... label.
I'll stick to vocalizing it as "Are-Cal".
