I am very much into old library records, but there is a current crop of producers big and small releasing what are usually called sample packs. Some of these are straight forward - e.g., a collection of short phrases or drum breaks for music producers or songwriters to use in their beats or songs. Others, and the ones that are more interesting for library fans, are more full compositions, very similar to library records and often with the option to purchase full stem recordings of each track which is fantastic if you're into sampling like me.

These seem to be marketed directly to music producers, samplers, beat makers, etc. I see loads of them given my interest in this type of thing. Curious if anyone checks them out just for listening? Are they even on any else's radar, or is it really just producers & beat makers?

There are many options out there, but here are a few good examples that give a sense of what is available. Many are purposefully made to sound like they could be from old records (at least the ones I am drawn to!). There are likely more current/pop sounding ones too.

Kingsway (perhaps the most well known, they've had placements with huge artists):

Kersey & Castle from producer Rob Viktum (dark, ominous, spy/horror type sounds):

Polyphonic Music Library:

Some are presented as royalty free - so one could use them in any project without paying additional fees, while others are kind of mixed - e.g., no royalty fee for a small indie artist, but negotiable royalties for a major placement.

I don't own many of them, but they are cool and worth checking out.

I do listen to stripped back beats just for pleasure and growing up loving hip hop I can happily listen to loops that don't do very much and if it's a library sample even better- would rather listen to Evidence or an Alchemist instrumental than rap these days.  I play stuff on a Brennan so it segues from a soul track into hip hop instrumental, library track, and so on.  It's great and they flow so well.  I'm also a fan of modern library muzak in the soul/jazz/beats vein.  In the UK you'll hear these on cooking programmes or something but they are very listenable as tracks in their own right.
An interesting aside;  I'm on the Northern Soul scene a library track from 2010 has been reissued on a vinyl 7" and being played out on the scene and sort of being seen as a discovered lost soul track.  I love the meld of old and new mixing together smoothly without it being obvious what the genre or decade it was created.
I'm also a (very) amateur sampler using an MPC and I am rubbish, but enjoy the process, if not the results!

Sounds as though we have similar tastes!

I also use an MPC - which one do you have? I've had my 2000XL since 2002 or 2003 - it's gotten a lot of use over the years, but I finally committed to learning Ableton over the pandemic and its quickly taken over. I can move so much faster in Ableton now, using the MPC feels really slow by comparison. It also awesome to have all my samples in one place rather than scattered over loads of zip disks. That said, some things will always be more fun on the MPC - banging out drums and simple chops, etc.

Anyway, some of these sample packs I mentioned above feel like a new version of library releases, though they don't seem to marketed as such. It will be interesting to see if this changes at all, but they've likely found their audience in the beatmakers / sampler types.

That would be awesome! I've not heard that one. If you do get around to ripping it, I'd appreciate it, thanks

I've got an MPC Live; am not very skilled on it but enjoy tinkering around with sound. My mate has always used Ableton and I can see how a drag n drop process could be beneficial.  I've not been on the MPC for months and when I sparked it up the other day I'd forgotten really basic things.  Thank god for the internet.

Cool - I've heard good things about the MPC Live. I admit to being very tempted when they released the retro version it - it looked like a cross between an old MPC and a classic NES console - seemed tailored to my tastes perfectly :) I resisted and stuck with my Ableton adventure. The time stretching & warp functions in Ableton are so fun and quick, you can really mangle the rhythm of samples to fit what you have in mind.

I previously used Pro Tools alongside my MPC to track everything out. I am now completely useless in Pro Tools and can't remember any key commands, so I know what you mean about putting something down for a bit and forgetting everything!
