Soraya (1978 Overlooked J.P. Massiera Project) 32bt WAV
« on: January 19, 2020, 01:32:58 AM »
My first post over here in a long time. Just reading on the forum that J.P. Massiera passed away, I thought it would be appropriate to dig up and post this one. An overlooked half Disco and half straight up bizarre/experimental project that he was a part of called Soraya from 1978.

I have to admit, that being from America I had no idea who Massiera was until about 7 years ago, a producer I know from the UK told me all about him and that he was a driving force on this strange but great Soraya LP. This was the only thing I unknowingly knew of his for years because I used to play a few cuts off this import record I discovered back in the day when I DJ'd.

This rip of mine is 15 years old, back when I was ripping all my vinyl in 32bt WAV (before I understood that when burning CD's it goes to standard 16 bt anyhow). So it's a bigger sized download.

thanks

Massiera was big at his whole way, in wide set of genres - from the screaming freak and progressive rock to electronic disco and trance in later years.

Soraya is one if his best works indeed.

PS. Excellent quality of the rip, I need to say!

Yes it is really great quality. The vinyl itself was a REALLY great pressing and had perfect mastering. And the fact that it's a 32bt WAV makes the pressing quality shine even more  8]

**help needed**
I hope some of you tech guys can help me with this.
I use to convert shared wav files to flac for a matter of disk space, and also to m4a for my car.
With this Soraya files I just can't do it with the two (good) software I've always used on my Mac, which are XLD and xACT.
Maybe the original wav files are too high quality rates? Just guessing.
Curiously, some (not all) of the software I use for tagging or playing the files just tell me the values of kbps/Hz/bit are "0". I know they're not, cause others say they are 3072 kbps, 48kHz, 32 bit.

**update*
Sorry guys, I just remembered that something like this happened already in the past, and I tried a solution I recalled.
I firstly downgraded the original 32 bit wav files into 24 bit wav files, and left kHz and kbps the same. Then, I encoded them to flac and m4a. It worked.
Actually, I lost something in sound depth, but it was the only way to do it, with these good (and free) but not professional softwares.
Is there any other ways/softwares you're aware of, guys, to do the work without bit depth loss?

Latest ffmpeg convert PCM 32 as 24 bit Flac - proof: https://i.imgur.com/4PNURyM.png , Flac doesn't support 32 bit encoding https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php?topic=83520.50

altrough MP4 ALAC support 32bit - https://i.imgur.com/uiwtwoY.png (i use mediamonkey windows only for alac encoding (f_alac_encdec.dll) which supports 32bit, ffmpeg encoder supports only 24bit)

I convert and upload album in ALAC 32bit (but not sure if this is a 32bit floating point)

That ultra high 32 bt WAV can cause some issues when both trying to covert to flac or burning CD's. This is a 15 year old rip from when i was first learning how this digital archiving worked. When dithered properly, there shouldn't be any depth lost to the human ear when converting to standard 16 bt. Glad neowave was able to help out here  ;)
