The Toothbrush Holder – links to "restored" uploads
« on: February 28, 2019, 10:08:32 AM »

I thought I'd collect all of my "restored"/"remastered"/"tampered with" versions (or whatever you'd like to call them) in a single thread. I do these for my own enjoyment and archival purposes, but here they are in case anyone would like to download them. This is not rocket science and anyone can do this with an hour to spare and a simple DAW and I'm sure some of them could be done better (or worse), but I try to be as transparent as possible and stay away from using noise reduction, doing massive EQ adjustments or add unnecessary limiting.

If you want your rip to be removed, just let me know and I'll delete the link – no questions asked!  :)

Thanks very much for your efforts, eric; all these restorations will be welcome in my collection, as I see your discretion when it comes to invasive remastering techniques is commendable, and most are records I'm curious to hear (only familiar with Antico Mondo Greco-Romano, which is simply lovely).

I appreciate the effort that goes into click removal. It is a boring and tedious job, but, in the end, well worth it. No nasty pops to take you out of the music. I'm going to give the Red Bus a spin. Thanks!

As A8 says. Thank you Eric.

What do you mean exactly by "true mono"?

What do you mean exactly by "true mono"?

No need to thank me, thank yourselves for sharing these albums in the first place!  :)

I don’t know the correct lingo, but by ”true mono” I mean that I sum the two channels of the stereo signal to mono. Most people use stereo cartridges when they transfer vinyl records, despite the recording being in mono. I guess it’s only really dedicated audiophiles who own and use mono cartridges for their mono records these days.

Anyway, by summing — or collapsing — the stereo signal to true mono you get a cleaner signal since it will cancel out parts of the groove distortion inherent in the the vinyl format. Plus, as a bonus, you’ll get a file that’s approximately half the size of the original.

Sometimes you’ll achieve the best result from summing both channels into mono. Other times you’ll get the best sound by just using one of the channels, either left or right, of the stereo signal. The reason for this might be more pronounced groove wear in one of the channels because of an improperly adjusted tone arm. Or there might be general phase issues preventing you from summing the stereo signal.

That was a long-winded, slightly confused explanation... I hope I made some sort of sense (Yes, I’ve had a beer).  :P

On Audacity, if I select MONO while recording will this result in a better rip?

On Audacity, if I select MONO while recording will this result in a better rip?

First of all, your rips sounds great as is, but if it's originally a mono recording, summing left and right channel gets rid of some of the noise and groove distortion and masks a certain amount of the clicks and crackle.

My suggestion would be to keep on recording in stereo, then have a quick listen to each channel individually and see which one sounds best. Sometimes the LEFT channel is cleaner than the RIGHT one and vice versa. If the difference is negligible, just merge both channels into mono (but preferably still ending up with a two-channel flac or wave file for compatibility's sake).

I'm not sure how it works in Audacity, but one way of doing it is just copying either left or right channel and paste it on the other. Perhaps there's a "mixer" function somewhere (like "Mix to mono") in Audacity?

I might be stating the obvious, but all of the above pertains to mono vinyl records. :)

P.S. And thanks once again for all of your awesome rips. This thread is in no way meant to be seen as some sort of negative comment on the sound of your or anyone else's rips, because they all sound great. I just find this "restoration" work relaxing, even if it just improves the sound quality a teeny, tiny amount.

Absolutely. I’m happy that people work to get the best rip out of what we have between us :-)

May I ask, track 07 - Magic In The Air from David Snell, Flute Meets Harp, have a listen at the start, it does seem to sound like the tape has stuck, does it really begin like this?

That's how le_tomval's original upload sounds. It seems like he used a direct-drive turntable and queued the stylus a little late and then pressed start... :)
