EXPLORING EASY LISTENING LPs (Sound Library vols 250, 251 & 252)My way to library music didn't go via easy listening, lounge and soundtracks (in the "retro" sense), as I know it did for many people. It's just recently that I've started buying some easy listening records. So here are three "eclectic" collections I made from those purchases. All from my vinyl rips (except track 11 on vol 250.) (I've become so addicted to the original vinyl sound that tracks taken from CDs or digital sources feel like cheating :-)
"Easy Excursions Travel Agency Presents..." is the banner for this new sideline, still under the umbrella of the Sound Library series. Needless to say (and as an alibi for this posting), many well-known library composers, arrangers and musicians were involved in easy listening:
Alan Moorhouse,
Brian Bennett,
David Snell,
Johnny Pearson (Sounds Orchestral),
Siegfried Schwab (The 18th Century Corporation),
Syd Dale (Bama Winds),
Johnny Scott (The Original Brasso Band),
Harry Stoneham,
Ray Davies,
Alan Tew,
Simon Park...
Some fresh treatments of classic popular tunes here, I think. And I'm still amazed at the fantastic sound achieved by
The Frank Barber Percussion Ensemble. As a point of departure I focused on the
"Pye 4D" series (The Quadrophonic issues) and the well-known
Studio 2 Stereo series from EMI-Columbia. And somewhere along the road I fell in love with the Bacharach tune
"Do You Know The Way To San José?" Imo, it's one of those evergreens that lends itself to many different treatments without losing its integrity or catchiness. So I started collecting versions of it and finally ended up with a comp containing 16 different versions of that song. I'm not sure anyone can stand listening to it all the way through, but it might be worth a try. If it doesn't work, you can use it as a weapon of terror, instrument of torture or masochistic pain inducer. Or put it on repeat while in quarantine or curfew... Maybe it will kill off the virus.
I hope this triple set can brighten up someone's day in these dark times.
