MP 2000

[Mr]

Legendary French label under Editions Montparnasse 2000, based in Paris.
The label was established in the late 60's by nightclub/cabaret owner André Farry, initially based at 27 rue de Bréa, Montparnasse - which was also home to the cabaret "La Villa", they later moved to 71 rue de Provence, Opéra.
Now under Universal.

About composers, artists and credits
The credits on these LPs are quite inconsistent - you'll often find different composers listed on the sleeve and labels of the same LP, and there are even some differences between the different issues and reissues. So yeah... you really need to check every part of the LP to get the full picture!
Sometimes the composer is listed as the main artist of a release, sometimes the performers are centered, sometimes no main 'artist' is specified... and sometimes the main artist is only listed on the LP labels.

I have tried to be as thorough as possible for this major revision, but I cannot rule out that some information may be incomplete as I haven't been able to hunt down the complete details for every version and release. Corrections and additions are warmly welcome, as always.

About original issues, reissues, and how to identify them
Presumably due to high demand, many of these LPs were reissued several times, sometimes with different cover art, titles, and occasionally with slightly different credits/information.
Beware of sellers justifying a high price with their copy being a "first pressing" - this often isn't the case.

Adding to the confusion, the first release issued on this label was actually MP.008 "Vocal Impressions by Janko Nilovic and Dave Sucky"; MP 01-MP 02 and MP 04-MP 07 are reissues, MP 03 contains new material issued later.
The first 7 catalogue numbers belong to five of the six releases (two 2LPs, two LPs, one 7" EP) issued under Editions Montparnasse 2000 - though all of this material was later reissued on MP 2000 as well.

To my knowledge, none of the sleeves or LPs on this label have a printed date - so tracking the chronology of these releases, separating original issues from their reissues etc. was a bit tricky.
I eventually cracked the code, however! A quick explanation follows below.

I. SLEEVES
Perhaps the easiest way to identify an issue/reissue is by checking the printing company. You'll find their logos on the rear sleeve, typically in the bottom right corner.
In chronological order:
1. The very earliest printings were done by JColombet PARIS-XV (MP.008 up to at least MP 21)
2. Subsequent pressings were by the same company, but with the "PARIS-XV" part dropped, leaving just the JColombet logo (up to MP 36)
3. Then Graphicolor (MP 37 to MP 84, except for MP 39, MP 41)
4. Except for two by Offset France (MP 39, MP 41)
5. The latter part of the catalogue was printed by JAT (MP 85 until at least MP 130).
6. And finally, Montreuil Offset (only reissues) did some later 80's reprints.

Essentially, if you have an earlier release with a later printing company (i.e. MP. 02 with JAT logo on rear), then this is a reissue.
Some of these LPs are known to exist in as many as four or five different version, of which the reprints and represses in many instances actually seem to be rarer than the original issues.

From MP 66 to MP 124, the label introduced a system where a category ("Romantic", "Jazz", etc.) is printed on the right side of the rear sleeve.
Reissues of older material done in this period often have these too.

II. LP/LABELS:
The label designs are fairly consistent, so there's unfortunately less obvious info to go on here. It seems that older LPs were often re-housed in newer sleeves, so it's not uncommon to find combinations of original (or older) LP and new sleeve.

A few notes, however: The earliest pressings have "BIEM" on the labels rather than SACEM/SDRM. The latest release I have seen with BIEM printed is MP 25.
The 80's repressings of earlier LPs have the updated "square" MP 2000 logo on the labels.

As of this writing, I don't own duplicate copies of any of these so I'm not sure if the pressing qualities may differ between the originals and the reissues.

Les «sonosynthèses électroniques» sont la résultante de diverses combinaisons dans le domaine électro-acoustique.
Nous avons utilisé pour la réalisation et l'élaboration de ce disque, divers procédés parmi lesquels: l'utilisation d'instruments de source électronique (ondes Martenot, ondioline Jenny, la série des claviers électroniques Allen et le synthétiseur Moog), et également des applications électro-acoustiques dans le domaine de la musique concrète (collage de bandes magnétiques, filtrage de sons produits par des oscillateurs, des boucles, etc...).
Ces sons ont été modifiés, transformés, de façon à changer leur structure harmonique, et enregistrés en synchronisation sur un ampex multipistes.
Le Moog synthétiseur est un instrument dont la source génétique sonore est purement électronique.
Il permet de produire n'importe quelle sonorité à partir de ses paramètres, c'est-à-dire, timbre, fréquence, attaque, dynamique, intensité, etc...
Il comporte plusieurs claviers ainsi qu'une bande spéciale permettant l'obtention de l'effet de glissando.
Le synthétiseur Moog n'est pas un ordinateur mais un réel instrument de musique permettant à l'exécutant d'extérioser sa sensibilité et de s'exprimer sans aucune contrainte.

Moi, j'aime la «Pop'Music»... Mais j'aime aussi Bach et Beethoven. Et également Tchaikowski. Pourquoi pas? On peut aimer une forme bien définie d'expression musicale sans pour cela nier systématiquement la valeur d'autres formes d'expression musicale... On peut aimer à la fois Vivaldi et les Beatles, Mozart et Pink Floyd, Wagner et Deep Purple. Encore une fois, POURQUOI PAS?

Le disque que je vous propose est de la «Pop'Music» des années 30 avec des sonorités électroniques de demain. En effet, la Pop'Music des années 1920-1930 était ce que l'on appelle maintenant de la «Musique de Genre». C'était la musique des «jeunes» de l'époque, elle reflétait l'état d'esprit d'une génération, elle répondait aux besoins du moment.

Cela peut vous sembler un paradoxe, un anachronisme, que de vouloir interpréter de la musique de genre en utilisant des instruments de musique électronique... Et pourtant... Une fois encore, POURQUOI PAS?

Le monde évolue vite... En 1990, on dira que les Beatles étaient des précurseurs: mais on se souviendra encore de Léo Delibes, de Brahms. Il y aura alors des musicographes qui évoqueront, avec un peu d'attendrissement, les années 70, cette période d'évolution de la musique «de genre» de son époque...

Ce disque est la résultante d'une gageure faite avec mon père, Jean-Jacques PERREY, que j'ai suivi sur la voie de la composition et de la recherche dans le domaine de la musique électronique. Lors d'un séjour aux U.S.A., dans son studio expérimental, j'ai rencontré cet instrument magique qui est le «MOOG», une petite merveille de la technologie moderne.

Ce disque est TOTALEMENT électronique, et ne comporte aucune sonorité d'aucun instrument de musique traditionnel. Il n'a d'autre prétention que de vous amuser et de vous détendre. Je n'ai, en aucune façon, cherché à édifier un «monument d'art», il ne comporte pas' de «message» pour les générations futures. Si toutefois vous en cherchiez un, vous y trouverez un message d'humour, de bonne humeur, car c'est d'un manque d'humour et de tolérance dont souffre le plus le monde actuel. Il faut ré-apprendre à sourire et à ne pas trop se prendre au sérieux...

Et si j'ai réussi à vous détendre et à vous distraire, le but essentiel que j'ai recherché sera atteint.

Et j'en serai infiniment heureuse...

CE DISQUE EST DEDIE A TOUS LES ENFANTS DU MONDE. Inspiré par la nature et les animaux, les thèmes musicaux ont été composés par JANKO NILOVIC.
C'est en observant son fils, SACHA, s'amuser au chef d'orchestre qu'il eut l'idée d'utiliser ces mêmes jouets pour ses orchestrations et de les faire jouer réellement par des musiciens professionnels.

A notre connaissance, c'est la première fois qu'un disque a été réalisé dans ces conditions, ce qui en rend son audition d'une originalité sans égale.

Chaque titre a son histoire et nous avons pensé laisser libre cours à l'imagination des papas et des mamans pour traduire à leur façon ce qu'ils ressentent en écoutant ces mélodies. Chaque enfant a sa sensibilité et son tempérament qui lui sont propres. Il peut donc imaginer des histoires fabuleuses à sa manière.

C'est en quelque sorte un disque éducatif qui développera ses sens de l'observation et de l'imagination...

Trois couleurs différentes avec un même orchestre, c'est ce qu'ont pu réaliser Richard MORAND et Albert ASSAYAG. Nous pouvons discerner dans ce disque une première partie purement symphonique, une seconde que nous appellerons «JAZZ SYMPHONIQUE» où les réponses entre les solistes et l'orchestre sont de factures traditionnelles et enfin quelques titres où un quatuor de clarinettes et une flûte prennent les chorus dans les œuvres dont l'esprit s'apparente au Big Band Jazz.

Symphonic Music?
Three different colours with the same orchestra is what Richard MORAND and Albert ASSAYAG have realized. We find in this record that the first part is purely SYMPHONIC, the second is what we can call SYMPHONIC JAZZ, where the dialogue between the solist and the orchestra is pure traditional writing, and at the end of the record we find a clarinett quartet and a flute taking the chorus in the pure Big Band Jazz traditional.

RENE COSTY, qui dans son premier disque (MP 63) nous avait restitué la musique des grandes époques que furent le MOYEN-AGE, LA RENAISSANCE, le BAROQUE, et l'ART CLASSIQUE, poursuit à présent cette rétrospective en nous livrant l'époque ROMANTIQUE.

Romantisme dans son esprit le plus large puisqu'aussi bien ce disque ne craint pas, sur sa seconde face, d'évoquer jusqu'au romantisme que l'on retrouve même de nos jours dans la musique de prédilection des jeunes.

In his first record (MP 63) RENE COSTY had given his musical impressions of the great composers of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque and the Classical périod, the now proceeds to give us his rendition of the Romantic era.

Actually, Romantic should be taken very broadly indeed, as Side B of the record goes as far as evoking the kind of romantiscism which is to be found in the favourite music of today's younger set.

By the Title "BEN THE BIG ONE" the composer describes (every hour) daily traditions of a London's day, by popular twaddles. (I am, The last passenger tube train "One o'clock and all well"... 5.30 The first passenger tube runs and the BBC starts the day's broadcasting... 9 am, St.Clement chimes. The Queen mother's piper plays outside Clarence House... 5 pm, the beginning of the end of the working day... 12 pm, All floodlights on public buildings are switched off. "Twelve o'clock and all'well".)

Ce disque a été conçu sous la forme d'une continuité de deux faces dans lesquelles les Pièces s'enchaînent selon une progression au niveau de l'intériorisation du propos musical, celui-ci évoluant, en effet, de manière à amener l'auditeur à un état de plénitude, dans le calme et la détente de l'esprit reposé.

Le système musical du "Bourdon" (cf "Les musiques à Bourdons. Edit: La flûte de pan.") ou pédale grave continuellement tenue, a été utilisé pour la plupart des pièces, parfois remplacé par un Ostinato, ou une succession lente et répétitive d'accords arpégés; comme cela se pratique, par exemple, dans la musique indienne avec le "Tamboura".

Ce système du "Bourdon" ou de l'Ostinato que nous, avions déjà expérimenté dans une précédente production (Bardo Thodol), joua un rôle essentiel dans l'aspect "relaxant" des musiques proposées. Celles-ci peuvent évidemment, être appréciées individuellement; toutefois, une véritable détente obtenue qu'après l'écoute d'une ou des deux suites (ou faces) en continuité.

Les "liaisons", enfin, font appel aux sons naturels qui ont toujours captivé l'homme. Ces sons redisent ici, que l'état d'équilibre du "corps"; et de la "pensée" (puisque la civilisation occidentale nous a habitués à cette dichotomie...) ne peut être atteint que dans l'harmonie avec le "dehors", avec la Nature-Mère qui vibre immuablement selon la pulsation d'un temps universel incommensurable... qui est aussi celui de l'homme...


This record is a double sided record; every pieces of music has a rythmic progressive relationship between the music.
The purpose is to direct the Mind into relaxation of a person and feelings of peace.
Familier through the music is, one point about each movement may be useful, for instance... the use of Bourdon, sometimes Ostinato, sometimes a continious session of slow movements and scherzo mixing Indian music with tambura.

This Bourdon and Ostinato, we have used in another production (Bardo-Thodol) and is very important in the performing of relaxation exercices.

Natural sounds are used between each piece to remind one that the entire body is involved in the perception of reality: "the mother nature", sensitive vibrations of universal time.

Best results are achieved by listening to the music in all the processes of this arranged record, and gradually the relaxation will spread throughout the entire body.
