KPMPK1001 Reviews: [KPM] KPM 1001 - The Mood Modern

Welcome to another KPMPK1001 Review!

In 1966, the first ever KPM 1000 series album was released after KPM, under the direction of Robin Phillips, decided to shift away from 78 rpm records and towards the more commercially available 33 1/3 rpm records. That decision would help to grow KPM into the library giant that they are today. But, that legacy wouldn't be established without the record that I'm reviewing today. The first ever KPM 1000 Series release, KPM 1001 - The Mood Modern!

The record features 16 tracks, most of which were done by library legend, Johnny Hawksworth. The other tracks were done by Hannelore Wright, Geoff Alderson, Derrick Mason, and John Waring. The album features music that was considered popular back in the mid 60s, ranging from "beat music" to smooth jazz that could be considered as lounge music (the Hannelore Wright tracks especially).

To me, this record serves as a time capsule that showcases the type of music that was popular to use in media back in the mid to late 60s. It's interesting to hear how much KPM has changed when compared to a later KPM record like KPM 1138 - Gathering Crowds, which features more orchestration and a much different sound when compared to The Mood Modern. However, this doesn't mean that The Mood Modern isn't a good album, in fact I feel that this album is actually pretty good.

Favorite Tracks: My favorite track on this album has to be The Eyelash. I really enjoy the rock and jazz elements incorporated into the track and the saxophones really go off on this track. Another track I like is Diamond, a nice relaxing smooth jazz piece that features a nice, calming flute.

But, that will do it for now! Overall, what do you guys think of this album? What are you guys' favorite tracks from the album?

Thank you guys so much and I will se you guys in the next review!

I got this LP quite early into my collecting days- long before I'd heard a lot of KPM and I liked 'Rhythm N Beat' I remember.  It's the sound Peter Parker would be groovin' to at the works dance before heading out into the night to solve crime.
