Music-De Wolfe/Music De Wolfe/De Wolfe Music (LPs)
« on: February 03, 2018, 04:40:37 AM »
List courtesy of Retronic, with revisions and additions by me.

Notable UK label under De Wolfe Ltd., originally founded 1909 by M. de Wolfe. Later known as "Music De Wolfe", and from 1986 as "De Wolfe Music" (DWS/LP 3582 and onwards). Catalogue continued on CD with DWCD 0001, later as digital with the same catalogue numbering - as of this writing, they are at DWCD 0715.
For earlier part of catalogue, including 78s, please see this thread.

No artist/performer specified unless otherwise noted.
Some records have (slight) inconsistencies in their titles between front cover and rear cover. I have indicated these as such: Front Cover (Rear Cover)
A few records exist with different sleeve designs and titles, and in one instance different listed performers. These have been highlighted.

As teased here, I'm currently working on a more detailed overview of the different DW pressings and will update this thread with additional information once I'm finished.

- Rose-Marie JANZEN

This recording introduces works by three French composers: Pierre Arvay, born in 1924 of a Hungarian father and an Italian mother; Gerard Gallo, born at Vire, in Normandy, in 1927; and Pierre Poulteau, born in Paris in 1927 of parents from the Saintonge region.
At first glance these three, though contemporaries, don't seem to have much in common: Poulteau's output is always clearly articulated, put together with a feeling for strict logic which nevertheless leaves plenty of room for alluring sonorities; Gallo, a twentieth-century romantic, likes to take his time conjuring up an atmosphere, opening himself up by "telling a Story"; Arvay is distinguished by his abundantly fruitful and multifaceted imagination. But they do have one basic trait in common: all three write music they like - spontaneously, and totally unconcerned with coteries or the ups and downs of musical fashion.
The PRELUDE ET ALLEGRO [track A1-A2] illustrates Pierre Poulteau's great respect for classical tradition, which he gracefully adapts into a contemporary language he explores to its limits, passing with ease from a modal to an atonal idiom, alternating and superimposing widely varied rhythms and endowing the whole with a feeling of complete freedom. The Prelude opens with several introductory bars in which the bassoon, clarinet and finally the oboe announce all the themes that go to make up the work. Then the oboe begins the prelude itself, a theme with liturgical overtones which takes on momentum, rises to the top of the instrument's range, then quietens and dies away to make room for the Allegro. The Allegro is chiefly based on the pattern of four quavers and a minim announced by the clarinet in the first few introductory bars; its form is a free adaptation of the Allegro of the classical sonata, its development showing a striking use of fugato.
Gerard Gallo has bestowed a purposefully neutral title on this composition: PIECE POUR PIANO [track A3], allowing each listener to give full rein to his own imagination. The work is a kind of vernal reverie, a meditation pregnant with contained energy, continually in movement, an intimate and confiding work which on two occasions is swept up into a crescendo of feverish phrases. The piece, which seem sto summon up regret for some vanished happiness, is written for the most part in a two-voice counterpoint, the space between the voices filled with shifting, fugitive harmonies.
The CHANT DES SPHERES [track B1-B2] is a suite of ten pieces which Pierre Arvay continues to work on, over the years, on the fringe of his other compositions. The "music of the spheres" is the music each of us carries inside him, that perception of the infinite which exists side by side with everyday life and transcends it. Through the intermediary of the composer's insight, this suite is moving towards the transcription of something which could only be expressed in a musical form. So far, five pieces of the CHANT DES SPHERES are completed, among them those for cellos and piano recorded here. Five more remain to be written. All are being built from interpenetrating elements which evoke the meanderings of our own thought processes.
In the piece for two cellos, an impassioned longing is expressed against a troubled background by superimposed seconds and full-throated outcries by both instruments, interspersed with pizzicato exclamations. A verse from the Book of Psalms comes irresistibly to mind: "Sicut cervus desiderat    ad fontes...": "As the hart panteth after the water brooks..."
The piano piece bursts in on the listener like a lightning flash, sweeping him into a world of rain and storm. Calmer episodes are invariably effaced by great virtuoso sequences in which the two hands race up and down the keyboard like a runaway engine; the resonances of the superimposed chords echo like unanswered questions. These interrogations become more and more insistent, stretching into infinity like parallel lines, the answers stored away against the time when we shall have attained a unity of faith steeped in knowledge.
The record ends with another work by Pierre Arvay, his STRUCTURE RHAPSODIQUE POUR BASSON [track B3]. In this fairly brief piece, the composer betrays a melodic and rhythmic inventiveness so lavish that the listener forges that these cascading phrases - now breathless, now mocking, occasionally dreamlike - are being produced by a single instrument.

Drums of all shapes and sizes, and for all occasions have been the primary musical instruments since the earliest days of mankind, growing more sophisticated and diverse over thousands of years among countless civilizations. Romans, Celts, Incas, Aborigines, Egyptians and Natives of darkest Africa all had one vital common link - "The Drum'. Thanks to modern technology the world of percussion and tuned percussion departments of today can offer a range of colour and contrast unrivaled by any other section of the orchestra. Albums 1, 2, 3 provide the whole spectrum of percussion/tuned percussion cues. Be it a simpole Xmas carol, a sinisted cue for a T.V. play or movie, or a dramatic cue, all of these can be dubbed under dialogue without overpowering the script or losing the musical intensity, thus offering the music editor or director a much greater degree of flexibility. The cues in albums 1, 2, 3 can be edited to any length without loss of artistic quality. The instruments used in albums 1, 2, 3 are as follows:

The Roumanian pipes, played by Fred Mann, have a curved construction, dating back two centuries. The pipes are closed at the bottom with wax and are made of bamboo.

Miss Ena Baga has appeared all over the world in every type of organ and piano performance. She has often appeared
on TV and radio programmes like "The Organist Entertains" and "The Oscar Peterson Piano Party", as well as
providing accompaniment to silent film festivals, playing the organ on the Queen Mary or making records on different
types of organ. Here she plays a selection of popular tunes on the cinema organ of the Odeon, Leicester Square.

The organ featured on this record is a Speechly 3 Manual Pipe Organ and was built in the late 19th century.
It is situated in studio one of the Angel Recording Studios. We believe this is the only studio in Britain with this facility.

[The cover art includes a clipping of what I'm assuming is the UK top 40 singles charts, with "Never Never" by Assembly at the peak position.
This single was issued the last day of October 1983, and the clipping indicates it's been in the chart for 4 weeks - so this is probably a chart from the end of November 1983.

Curiously, "Never Never" never actually reached #1 in the UK charts, so the list was probably edited by the sleeve designer.]
