Bosworth Record (78s)
« on: March 08, 2020, 11:53:35 PM »
British label under Bosworth & Co. Ltd, based in London.
Like several of their contemporaries, Bosworth was a major music publisher and already had a vast catalogue of works before getting into the library business, which is reflected in their output; in addition to presumably original works for library usage, we find arrangements and original works by several composers of note outside library.

The company Bosworth was founded all the way back in 1889, in Leipzig, and quickly established itself as a notable publisher of popular music.
Their initial catalogue contained works by the likes of Gilbert & Sullivan, Alfons Czibulka and Carl Zeller, and as the company expanded their business with further branches in London (1982), Wien (1902) and Zürich (c. 1908), and by buying up several other publishers, their catalogue grew considerably. Notable acquisitions reflected in their 78 releases include Verlag W. Aletter (1896), V. Kratochwill Musik-Verlag (1902), Julius Chmel & Co. (1902), Musikverlag Lyra (1938) and Verlag v. Josef Blaha (1939).
Following expansion and acquisitions, their catalogue grew to contain works by Karl Komzak, Carl Millöcker, Strauss, Johann Schrammel, Robert Stolz, Oskar Nedbal, Siegfried Translateur, José Armandola, Marc Roland, Julius Fucik, Carl Lorens, etc., etc.

According to Eddie Shaw & Alan Heinecke, who compiled a label discography in 1998, Bosworth started issuing their 10" 78s c. 1936. At the time, the company was based at 8 Heddon Street, but due to the turbulent times, they moved to 14-18 Heddon Street in 1941 after their premises were hit by a bomb.
They list the catalogue number prefixes and their meanings as such:
Quote
BE = Theatre organs
BB = Military bands
BD = Single-sided except for 113-6
BA = South American music
BX = Single-sided
BC = General

Though I would suggest revising this slightly, to the following:
Quote
BE = Theatre organ
BB = Brass band/military band
BD = Short cues; fanfares, main/end titles, play-ins, links, etc.
BA = South American music
BX = Main catalogue (no specific theme), single-sided

BC = Main catalogue (lettering likely indicating Bosworth & Co.)
BCV = As above, but on vinyl

There exists several pressings of the Bosworth catalogue; British (several different pressings), c. 50 records issued in New Zealand, and a handful issued in Australia under Macquarie Bosworth.

A photo of a more detailed approximate date chart, as seen in the Shaw-Heinecke discgraphy, can be See Moon Monkey's excellent catalogue thread here.

For later LP/CD releases, please see Bosworth Backgrounds

Here is the information that I received from their owners (MusicSales.co.uk) in 2008, who I believe still own Bosworth. I did share this many years back:

Hope that helps with this list.

Fully revised and expanded today. Thanks for your inputs, everyone!

For a label with such a sizy catalogue, their releases are unfortunately still quite obscure, many copies having yet to surface online.
