I do occasionally pull my head out of Italy, and this is one of the early Intersound LPs I most enjoy. Though not the biggest fan of ragtime
(*cough* or dixieland, Germany!), I was initially sucked in by the deceptively Pekka Pohjola(!)-esque first seconds of "Ma belle Daniele", but found myself really enjoying this LP. About as unique as its title, this LP has a very odd combination of styles. It's all based around a ragtime-esque piano, but surrounded with a bit of everything, really; boogie-, circus- and cabaret-isms, a classic German brass section, female vocalists, funk, a touch of late 70's rock, uhm...
disco? - synth and
vocoder!? Who comes up with this stuff?
If nothing else, I urge you to check out the opening of "She's So Kind", which has maybe the most off-kilter combination of piano and bass I've heard. "Eccentric beat", indeed!
Can't remember where I got this, but big thanks to the original ripper!
