CS 22:
How would the music of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt have sounded, long before the birth of Christ? To unlock the secret I spent many months in these countries searching through museums, libraries and ancient places for clues, where I found on pictures, tombs and pottery, representations of many varied musical instruments.
Back home I made copies of these instruments as exactly as possible according to the ancient documents and pictures. On this sleeve is shown the comparison between the ancient drawings and my newly constructed instruments.
While composing music for these instruments from my own personal feelings generated by the country, people and culture, I have also tried to include the musical language which may have been enjoyed by the Pharaohs and their slave.

Joel Vandroogenbroeck was born in Brussels. He later studied music in that city and was awarded the diploma for classical music (piano) by the "Jury Musical de Belgique". After this he went on a tour of Africa with the Bobby Jaspar Group. Invitations to various European festivals followed, where he appeared with such musicians as Zoot Sims, Lee Konitz, Toots Thielemanns and Eric Dolphy: at this time he developed his own individual style of flute - and piano - playing.
In the early 70s Joel worked in Rome as composer, arranger, musician and technician. A tour of Europe followed with "Brainticket", his own rock group. After that the artist studied Indian music and the Sitar with Trikka Kannar at the Academy of Music in Basle. Swiss and German Television Companies began to commission film music from him.
In the last four years Joel has concentrated increasingly on composing for films and on other illustrative music forms. The pieces which have appeared on Coloursound label all confirm his fine musicianship and the fascinating atmospheric effect of his music.
In 1981 Joel spent some time studying in the USA; he found his experiences in New York and Boston particularly invigorating - a new source of inspiration for his own creative work. Some influences from this American Journey can already be felt in "JOEL However", this new recording of music for the flute.
