BBC Video Home Logo from 1981 and 1986

This logo from the eighties is interesting, but the clue is even more so. Can anyone ID this? Here's the two versions. Thanks in advance.

The second one is indeed Peter Howell, the first one I've seen attributed to Syd Dale, though I can't remember where so I can't confirm.

There is a longer stereo version of the first one somewhere, and I've never been able to find out where it came from!
