Boosey and Hawkes Ltd (78s)
« on: February 03, 2018, 04:20:27 AM »

Boosey & Hawkes are estimated to have established their library in the late 30's. (1937?)
The company themselves should need no introduction - actually a merge of two previously established publishers, Hawkes & Son and Boosey & Co., they already had a rich library of published works to pick from, including works by big names such as Edward Elgar, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst and many others, some works of which appear in their library catalogue. After acquiring Russian publisher Editions Russes de Musique in 1947, their catalogue also included the likes of Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev.

Both for their 78 catalogue and later LP releases, the label is very focused on orchestral music, somewhat in line with their publishing tradition. There is also a good handful of band music to be found here (of which Hawkes & Son were an important publisher), played by various British military bands both of Wales, Ireland and England.
It seems some 78s were also manufactured and released in Australia, under Boosey & Hawkes (Aust.) Pty. Ltd., Sydney.

While I originally assumed there to be several series of 78s released, it seems the letterings bear a significance to the instrumentation/music contained on the release, and that they all belong to the same overall numbering system.
From what I am familiar with, this would be my assessment of these letters' meanings:
M. = March/Military band (Red)
O. = Orchestral/Orchestra (Green)
S. = String ensemble (Green)
V. = Vocal/Choral (Blue)

Unlike what you might see in other labels, Boosey & Hawkes seem to mix up their catalogue with both 10" and 12" 78s - the latter format being employed for the longer single tracks (or collection of tracks), running up to about 4½ minutes.
For their 12" releases, a T is added to the catalogue number - e.g. "OT." or "M.T." (which indicates "Orchestral, Twelve-inch" or "Military band, Twelve-inch", respectively).

Information gathered from my own collection, various images of the records found online as well as from their catalogues. A well-deserved shout-out to a8detective for his helpful documentation of a large chunk of these.
As there is no clear way to distinguish the A- from the B-side without being familiar with both, I have not even wagered a guess as to which side is which when this information has been unavailable. As such, some of the A-sides listed with an unknown B-side may in fact be the B-sides.

Additions and corrections heartily welcome as always! :)

I posted the Numerical Index from a 1961 Boosey catalogue in this thread (or it's ancestor) about 5 years ago, completing the listings (more or less) from 2000 up to 2406. From a 1969 catalogue, here's the remainder of the 78s:

  • 2391 to 2405 are in the 1961 Supplement, originally posted by me, reposted by Mr, now reposted by me in the Catalogues Thread.
  • 2405 onwards are in the previous post.
