It's an Apple thing. They're AAC files which are lossy audio in an MP4 container. If you were to change the MP4 extension to M4A the file would still be playable (on my Mac, at least) but the extension would better identify it as an AAC audio file. Whilst it's a lossy format an AAC file gives better quality audio than an MP3 file at he same bitrate.
