Title: Some De Wolfe
Post by: Retronic on February 21, 2026, 09:04:41 AM
These are old rips- these days I clean everything thoroughly before recording records so any noisy pops and cracks let me know and I will re-do.
Unsure if I ever shared these but these are my own rips I believe done over the years and should all be FLAC.  There may be someone else's rip in there - I haven't checked but I have the record so can do any again to get the best quality we can.

Next few:

Th first one is someone else's rip but I do have the record as well.
3068 has some tracks missing so you may not want it but again I have the record so can fill the gaps at some point.
All will probably need tagging fully as these were recorded years ago when I was less fussy but tracks are clearly labelled so it's a quick job.

If anyone's wondering why I have some LPs with missing tracks, it goes back to a few years back now when my external HD died with all my rips on it. Luckily I had a Sony Flac Walkman and could transfer the files back off that.  Unfortunately to save space I had deleted tracks I liked less from many LPs and this is why they still crop up in that format from time to time.  I never got around to re-recording them.

Retro, DWLP 2968 Journey Into Sound has some skips on tracks 6, 7 and 8 in particular (I'm still listening to it!). Would you be able to re-rip this one, please?

I've not paid much attention to this album before but track 2 in particular bears similarities to Girl In The Dark, track 3 on its numerical neighbour DWLP 2969 Eye For An Eye. And yet they are accredited to Keith Papworth and Jack Trombey respectively. Curious.

Oh, and DWLP 3068 Flower Of Gloster is incomplete as the folder name says. Another one for ripping, please?

Ah yes, now I’ve looked at Discogs in more detail I see there were two versions of 3056 as you say. And the 10” has one more track than the 12”. How confusing! I have track 8 but only in MP3. It’ll do for now. Thanks anyway Retro.

Man, the DW/LP 3267 is stellar. They're real field recordings! Stuff like this usually only appears on specialised labels (Ocora, Bärenreiter, Albatros, Nonesuch, etc).

Turns out that I've had this for ages as MP3 and never gave it attention. But that lossy rip has perfect photos of cover and labels. I've scaled them down to a reasonable size, and here they are.

I remember I bought that Africa directly from De Wolfe in the 90's.  I was hoping that the Dawn of The Dead Ammo store track was going to be on it and was disappointed when I heard it.  Thinking back I could have got some of the rarer classics from them at the time but had no knowledge of what was good.  The guy I spoke to told me an Italian label was putting a compilation together and using a track called 'Hot Heels' so I did buy 'Vocal Shades and Tones' for £18, unused and it went on to be on the brilliant Sound Book comp.

Haha! I can imagine. I'm an aficionado of field recordings, so was delighted. Listening to Vocal Shades & Tones now, and I'm loving its '60s vibes.

PS I want a time machine to the '90s. When you could just walk in to all these fabulous library labels and buy their records like in a shop. Or perhaps it was mail order, but that's almost as good. A dream.

Many thanks Retro. DWSLP 3356 Ena Baga At The Compton Organ Of The Leicester Square Odeon is probably the worst library record I've had the pleasure to listen to! I can't imagine why De Wolfe would have commissioned this in 1977 - and in stereo! I know 1977 seems back in the dark ages but I can assure our younger members this sort of organ music was not typical of what we were listening to at the time. It's more appropriate to the first half of the sixties.

Mind you, you did warn us that there were some duffers amongst those DWs that we were missing. This certainly takes the crown!

I dig the organ lol. Ena Baga also did one or two of those silent movie type library records for De Wolfe (at least DWSLP 3332 The Silent Film Era No 3, which contains quite a banger in Cockney Rebel), so I don't think this one was meant to depict anything close to a contemporary sound so much as provide source audio if someone wanted to perhaps create a simulated retro scene.

Aha, I knew that would flush out the organ-heads!! I was perhaps being a little mischievous with my post. I was just surprised that De Wolfe considered there was still demand for this soundtrack in the late seventies. Hehe fair enough. I have this thing about soundtracks, that's how I got into library -- my idea is that soundtracks, while still being art in the sense that there is an element of creativity and taste, also serve a definitive utilitarian goal of enhancing or manipulating audience emotions. Take for example the Star Trek episode Amok Time where Spock suddenly must bang and has to fight Captain Kirk to do it -- the plot is doggerel but the actors acted it to the hilt, and the soundtrack is so good it carries the episode by making the ridiculous plot have emotional resonance (the More Soup lietmotif that plays when Spock is lecturing T'Pring is so sad). So, barring some directorial decision and strong narrative reason to do so, having a happy bouncy song during a funeral would be an objectively wrong use of music (narrative reasons to do so might be to create cognitive dissonance to hint to the viewer that the POV character is not objective; to indicate the dead person was so foul that everyone is glad they are dead; etc.).

Library, being in large part a "soundtrack without a cause", is basically emotional music composed but not in response to a specific narrative beat -- a floating soundtrack of pure emotion that could in theory be deployed appropriately or inappropriately depending on end use. Most library is pleasant to listen to but not so groundbreakingly evocative, so it's just like weirder easy listening music..... but sometimes I listen to a library track and it pushes the right buttons in such a way to drive me hog wild, so good that despite the fact it's just a floating emotion it has an effect on me like it was specially composed music perfectly executed in a perfectly written scene. (Plenty of non-library music does this as well, library is just particularly good for it since it doesn't have any associations to particular media for me, and 99% has no lyrics.)

I also just really have a thing for organs... (that's what she said)

TLDR -- Cockney Rebel is a banger in my heart but possibly just for my heart. Maybe I should make one of the user comps here of all the fairly harmless pleasant mid-tempo tracks that got me foaming at the mouth

Just out of interest, what de Wolfe albums are the duffers? I once made an observation about de Wolfe's music: nothing says intense drama more than a piccolo and a glockenspiel...

Thank you for the latest two Retro. Yes, track 4 is rather an abrupt end. Strange. Could it be that the track ends too close to the label causing the record arm to lift prematurely (assuming your deck has an auto lift option)? But no worries I've still got my MP3 version to hand which does finish correctly.

Hehe fair enough. I have this thing about soundtracks.......
Thank you for your insight rudluff. I found your post a joy to read. And, boy, have you gone deep into soundtracks. It makes me feel that I've only touched the surface. I've been fascinated with themes to movies and TV programmes ever since I can remember. I recall one time writing to the BBC (when letters were the accepted form of communication!) enquiring after a particular theme and getting a response which effectively said that it was not a commercially released piece of music and so unavailable to me. I must have been about 10 years old at the time and it felt like a slap in the face. It was back in the sixties but didn't dampen my enthusiasm for collecting soundtrack music be it themes to movies, TV programmes or even TV adverts.

Forums like this have helped enormously to lift the veil of secrecy around library music. A good example is back in 1970 I bought a Marble Arch album entitled Top TV Soundtrack Themes and felt like I had won the lottery. Not only did it contain themes to a whole load of TV programmes which were airing at the time but they were original recordings and not covers which were so prevalent at the time. It was only a few years ago when I shared it on the forum that I understood the relevance of the word "Standard" on the record label. Standard Music Library of course which was a joint venture with London Weekend Television and Bucks Music.

I still get excited when I stumble across a piece of music in my library collection which I perhaps hadn't listened to before and instantly recognise it as a theme to some TV programme or other. Maybe I need to get out more!
