Title: zach's keep or sell
Post by: zach on January 23, 2026, 10:25:04 PM
over the years i've bought and sold a lot of library records, and kind of wish i had better documented what i once had. all the years of collecting and downsizing have left me with this little chunk of library music. as life goes, i just moved to a new place again and did a massive purge of my record collection, selling several hundred of them in the hopes of not being consumed by my collection. with all that being said, i've now come to the library records in this recent round of downsizing. some of these i do listen to regularly, and others i haven't picked up to play in over a decade, but for whatever reason felt inclined to hold on to for all these years. in this thread i'm going to go through them and finally narrow them down to just absolute favourites. i may even keep all of them i don't know haha.

anyway, i'm gonna go pull something to play and report back soon.

Music for Dancefloors: The KPM Music Library (2013):

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnvjZYJyMnYaVqGKuiNX09P_yhIEHYx1nGnYMI8ALKH6gNWu9FmPzzhC7rMjK3a66DTJo9ewdja84IxRiL76VJaqj2tu5KaGG8Wxh5H5lNXuTEdyuSAAIK6xgK3bRZ3RPW8LP1Yho6hCEVgMWf_rhXyDXIc7NqHD_ZAYcdV79EL0wXDRG3DWxej5DHqEE/s550/b.jpg)

first one i pulled off the shelf is the biggest, and most recent. it's a 2-LP compilation of kpm, Themes and others. i got this for christmas at the time mostly for 'Funky Express' as i couldn't afford the original kpm record. i think it's a good collection of tracks but half of it isn't really my taste. starts off strong with three great tracks. 'That's What Friends Are For (vocal version)', then possibly my favourite in 'Unlimited Love', and then 'Funky Express'. i wish there there were a couple other disco tracks on here but it's really just the one. the real clunkers on here for me are the latin and reggae tracks. and outside of 'Crash Course' the whole d-side is a pass for me. i completely forgot that this thing comes with CDs too. the one disc is live versions from a jazz club. while it was fun to listen to once i doubt i'd ever listen to those again.

if i could afford some of the original records i'd probably sell this now. but considering this'll be the only physical way of playing my two favourite tracks on here i'll be putting it back on the shelf.

verdict: KEEP!

This is a fun idea.
The Strut KPM Dancefloors has tracks that were originally licensed on Studio One, Conroy LPs so when this came out I was a bit confused.  The KPM library is huge and you could pick 20-30 absolutely killer tracks but I guess it's about balance and personal taste.  Worth a keep though.
What's next off the shelf?

Thanks for this critique @zach. I have the 2-CD version of this album which i bought a few years back in one of the few remaining record shops in Brighton (UK). I agree it's definitely a keeper. I found it interesting that it features a number of lesser know tracks from the KPM library as well as others as Retro has said. But they're all good.

For me the KPM All Stars live recordings from April 2000 took the music to a whole different level. I found it great to hear the "team" immersing themselves into what I would call KPM's Greatest Hits. I'm not usually a fan of live recordings but this whole side had me cheering along with the rest of the audience.

I'm looking forward to your next choice.

thanks guys! yeah as you both mentioned the selection is indeed a bit odd. and i'm buying it for the 'kpm library' and i'm listening to the first track going wait a minute haha.

was looking at the discogs listing and it looks like the original vinyl release has different tracks towards the end. and that they put out some other ones, Chappell, Bosworth, etc.

Bruton Music - Disco Happening (1978):

after shovelling snow all day in this terrible weather, it's time to relax with a record. looked at the shelf and thought oh yeah this is a great one, gotta play this. always liked stuff from the Bruton library, and this one was solid enough throughout for me to buy. a lot of library records feel disjointed with differing styles, but this one flows very nicely. a classic porno record, always hearing stuff from this. funky disco all over. it's hard to pick a favourite, 'Disco Partners', 'Disco Stepping', 'Itchy Funk' and 'Soul Stomp' are all so good! wasn't a hard choice for the verdict on this one.

I discovered this one in a weird way. ‘Funky Feeling’ was used in Prisoner Cell Block H a lot.  I watched an old Girls On Top in the mid 1990’s and heard it on there so called the production company who were local and got the track name.  I happened to be in London later that week and spotted it in a Record & Tape Exchange and got it straight away.  This was in my early days of collecting before I understood cataloguing, how old vinyl records related to CDs with the same tracks on etc.   I also had this out at the weekend looking for old 60’s soul sounds.   The title ‘Northern Soul’ isn’t what you’d hope.

For many people, Northern Soul is indelibly associated with Barry Took:

I was looking for that track for ages for just that reason, and as soon as I heard it on the shop record player, that album was in my bag!

The Music For Dancefloors Bosworth selection is even more baffling, as literally half of it wasn't even Bosworth...

The Music For Dancefloors series often incorporates music that isn't even from the library that is on the packaging for some reason. The Chappell version for instance features tracks from Peer International and Bruton.

Still one of my faves. Like Retro, I remember Funky Feeling playing a few times on PCBH and as LT mentioned Northern Soul on the earlier series of Points of View programmes. Also, the album featured in full as part of S4C’s test card music prior to launch (Welsh fourth channel for those outside of the UK). Then there was Tracey Ullman’s Girls on Too comedy programme.  I often revisit this album. Definitely a keeper !

Golden Ring Records - Keep Fit (1975):

put this one on not really remembering the tunes, just recall some very light and breezy disco. there's a couple tracks that i like, 'Never Mind' and 'Touch And Go'. not really to keen on the waltz or samba tunes. most the record for me is just too fluffy and doesn't really grip me. there's some other Werner Drexler releases put out later on with Happy Records that i much prefer, like stuff on Imaginations. i think this is just a little too early for my tastes with this style. i did find myself replaying those two tracks a couple times actually, but i think we've found the first one i'm going let go of.

a Selected Sound for tonight, and one of my favourites. they promise super hits and deliver. not really sure what's up with this, as a lot of the songs are commercially released. it starts out with a bang, 'Please Love Me Again' is amazing and instantly my favourite song on the record. this version of 'Stern von Afrika' is not favourite but still a great tune. 'O.K. Chicago' is nice and funky! 'This Is Music That I Like' is a great disco ender. very few low points on this release for me. even 'I Hear A Melody' is great, not the typical style i look for in library but it's catchy! easy choice here.

Title track is an classic disco-banger that always make me happy.

Most of the commercially available tracks are from Sirocco a label created by Roger Tokarz (who also created Tele Music), to capitalize on som of the more pop sounding tracks from TM. They are by french library musicians like Marc Chantereau, Pierre-Alain Dahan, Slim Pezin & Mat Camison

might be my favourite library record, this thing is amazing. the polish library stuff is always my favourite. Zbigniew Gorny and his orchestra really killed it. it's hard to imagine a more perfect song then 'Magma'. that minute long buildup intro, then dropping the funkiest damn thing i've ever heard. not far behind is the title track, then 'Oversea Flights', 'Newport' and 'Net Service'. all of them funky disco dreams. i bought this thing in 2014 for 6 euros, what bang for your buck, and it still looks to be as affordable as then. bury me with this record.

always forget about Quango & Sparky, can't really say i've listened to that many Sonotons really. i do like Narholz and Fiddy a lot though. this is great, just a bunch of disco as the title suggests. favourite track is definitely 'Never Say Forever', which brings back memories of Seka for Christmas. 'Gogo West' and 'San Fran Jubilee' are really good too. a couple clunkers, the rock ones, but overall it's a winner.

i remembered loving this one back in the day but haven't spun it in years. sad to say i was kinda underwhelmed. starts out strong with 'Friday Night Fever', then a string of gloomy or down right bad ('Don't Hustle Me') tracks follow. the only other shining light on the a-side for me was 'Gentle Rave Down'. thankfully the b-side is much stronger. 'Making Waves' and 'Don't Make Waves' are the two standouts. i don't know, the record just leaves me flat, a bit soulless. i've never been the biggest fan of Midas Touch stuff, this was always the exception. on the fence a bit here, but i think it's still good enough to keep.

this one will always be the Swedish Erotica album to me. Another interesting pair of reviews. Thanks zach. And if nothing else they're prompting me to give them a listen.

Choice Morsels: I think you're losing the plot. Bearing in mind your downbeat comments I thought you were going to conclude that you should sell it.
Pulse Of The City: Of course coming from KPM it's bound to be good. And I just love the brass. But as far as I can see this is the only library album composed by Richard Morcombe or Geoff Castle.

now we're talking! absolute classic here of the polish variety. some of the cleanest PRiTV recordings. this was a blind buy back in the day just for that PRiTV name. Aleksander Maliszewski supplying his best tracks ever. 'Blue Funk', 'Golden Funk' and the insane 'Yellow Funk', top five library track for me, just beautiful. that one two punch to open the record just sends me to space. 'Funky Green' towards the end is another favourite, laid back groove. library art doesn't really matter that much to me, but definitely my favourite library cover art. i even used it as an avatar on this site many years ago. can't get enough of this one!

another 1984 release for tonight. gave this one a spin, and it starts off great with 'Sometimes It Changes'. a nice little funky light track. the rest of the a-side isn't really my thing. then the flipside starts with another good track in 'Metropolitan Sounds (Points)'. followed by more stuff that i'm not that into. it's not terrible, but i already ripped this in the past and don't think i'll ever revisit this record outside those two noted tracks, so i can let this go.

But as far as I can see this is the only library album composed by Richard Morcombe or Geoff Castle.

They were both in a jazz funk band called Strange Fruit, I wonder if it's them playing on this album?  Here's a track from their sole commercial album, which I rather like - I wonder why they didn't do more library stuff?

Music for Dancefloors: The KPM Music Library (2013):

first one i pulled off the shelf is the biggest, and most recent. it's a 2-LP compilation of kpm, Themes and others. i got this for christmas at the time mostly for 'Funky Express' as i couldn't afford the original kpm record. i think it's a good collection of tracks but half of it isn't really my taste. starts off strong with three great tracks.

Oh my god I love that album!!
I have actually had the first song on it on repeat this whole year for some reason! Such a good album.

Selected Sound - Romantic Moods (1980):

this is one that i've liked a lot more with time. blind bought this back in the day after seeing Zbigniew Gorny on the track listing, and the Lucky Simon name. with a name like romantic moods i wasn't expecting much in the way of uptempo stuff, and you don't really get any haha. 'Melancholy' towards the end is the closet thing in that aspect. the rest is mostly slow grooves. and i must say my favourite track is the Gorny one, 'Francoise'. would have fit well on Funky Eyes or Match-Ball. in the past i've been inclined to let this go, but i'm glad i still held onto it. not my favourite, but anything the polish guys do is hard to get rid of. and my ears just love to listen to that signature sound.

well i remember buying this one for a specific song, the best version of 'Stern Von Afrika'. don't recall the rest of the record being that great, and i must say the a-side was still a disappointment haha. the flip side is a little better, 'Island Of My Dreams' is quite good, and 'Holiday Hopp' is okay. overall just not my type of sound. definitely not something i need to own anymore.

kpm - International Business (1981):

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjDqwmIUyDs6SikUtZEoMriR_4t7oM7rOVaCOFDqb0xVfFVUiTuqPML5HelNOpxcxARs7J_K-7OZ0B51iCnMH5h2DrYwTG1GAaFkGsWG41q92rIVNTZz6u3I4-NXmAxYKS8I6yn4sxzgGbqwcSGojpN5b2WZuhxk3ekFKcGpsxsdu9EIBmM_9dYZy0bYI/s576/20260220_192434.jpg)

the best kpm no doubt about it! unbelievable disco all over this thing! how the hell is something called International Business so damn funky. very misleading title. starting off with the amazing 'Export International' and all its different versions. 'Conference International' follows and is so breezy and delightful, great strings. 'Travel International' comes up and is an instant classic, my favourite of the group. super catchy horns and fast as hell. 'Troubleshooters' is straight forward driving disco, sounds like something straight outta CHiPS. some less intense stuff towards the end, but it's still all good. i feel like this gets way overlooked in the kpm library. amazing!

kpm - International Business 2 (1981):

despite releasing the same year, most of this one feels much more 80s, including the packaging and their updated logo. can't say i've listened to much kpm that wasn't a green cover. the a-side starts a little more gloomy, with a bit of breezy in there. flip it over and we start getting some great stuff. 'Transport International (b)' is awesome, fits on the first volume better. the other standout is the funky stomping track 'Transport International (e)'. first heard this track in some mid-80s garbage video porno. certainly not as good as the first volume, but a worthy entry in the kpm library.

Totally agree about International Business - it's glamorous, jet-setting American drama series music, not Businesscore!  Travel International is definitely inspired by the theme from Hart To Hart, but I'm fine with that as they're both fantastic tunes.

Very much enjoying this thread, and I'm looking forward to the next instalment!

Oh, one more thing...Export International was used as the theme to It'll Be Alright On The Night 3, and given a title sequence that suits it perfectly, I think (from about 2m 07s)

thanks! and glad someone agrees with me.

always nice to hear where these tunes were actually being used.

Major Records - 6090 (1975):

a damn classic! one of my favourite library records. tons of breezy disco by the master Walter Murphy. a-side starts really strong and only lets off at the end with the two Tom Manoff clunkers. the b-side is the real monster. starts off with the amazing 'More And More Love'. followed by a top 3 library track for me, 'Black Velvet'. it's so insanely beautiful it's hard to believe, a pinnacle of the genre. and the record doesn't stop there. i first heard 'Dancin' in the porno The Vixens of Kung Fu. and funny enough i got this record from fellow member here Porn_Library many moons ago.
