Music-De Wolfe (78s)
« on: February 03, 2018, 04:40:18 AM »
Sincere thanks to a8detective, Killa and Horror Bag for their help with this list.

Notable UK label founded 1909 by M. de Wolfe.

For LPs and latter part of catalogue, please see this thread.
The catalogue numbers for these all belong to the same chronology as De Wolfe's LP releases, and this list covers the catalogue up until the last 78 rpm release.
The first LP is DW/LP 2732 (1962), and the last 78 is DW 3083 (1968).

Some of the composer names never appear in full here, and where possible, I have tried to use contemporary sources to find the name used for these composers at the time. As such, H. Baynton Power is listed as "Henry Baynton Power" (not 'Harry'), W. G. Chapman is listed as "W. Granville Chapman", etc.

Curiously, some of these recordings actually seem to be licensed from elsewhere - for instance, the same recordings of "Tarentine" (DW 2842) and "Nonchalante" (DW 2887) by Gabriel-Pierre Berlioz appear on the French label Teppaz' 7-inch 45.571 "Light Music" - and are in fact not performed by not by the London Studio Orchestra conducted by Hugh Granville, but by Orchestre Symphonique de Paris directed by Léon Barzin, with André Rabot on the bassoon.

Nathan le Prophete
(A Symphonic Suite in four movements)
The Prophet is shown as the Spiritual Guide to King David, and announces to him God's intentions regarding the future of the people of Israel, and the building of the Temple by David's Son, Solomon.
It is also Nathan who is sent by Jehova to reproach David for his adultery with Bathsheba, David repents, and is forgiven, but is told that his son must die.
But Solomon, David's second son, finds favour in the eyes of God, is crowned King of Israel, and anointed by Nathan, the mouthpiece of the Lord.

Hey, Mr, do you or anybody else confirm when the final 10" 78rpm record was issued by De Wolfe?

I ask because I've got several more listings past your last, DW 3083 (1968).

My own listings go all the way up to DWLP 3147 - The London Studio Group - Loony Tunes (1969)

Like so many others, I can't claim infallibility, only educated guesses. I don't mind being wrong, so long as I'm correctly listing these gems. And when I'm wrong, that generally means another valuable learning experience for yours truly ;)

Can any of you offer some opinionated wisdom?   8]

I'll be waiting. Thanks.

Honestly, I think questions about this listing should really be aimed at resident De Wolfe 78-expert a8detective.
To my knowledge, DW 3083 (1968) was indeed the last 78. I'm not so sure about when they dropped to 10" for the 12" LP format, but both kinds have"LP" in the catalogue number - which essentially means "non-78". I guess it's not the size that matters, but the speed ;)

edit:
A quick Discogs lookup seems to indicate DW/LP 3144 "The First Dozen Years" was the last 10" LP.

Actually, seeing as how you started a thread inventory dedicated to De Wolfe 78s, I thought this was the best place to ax my question.

I'd hoped that yourself and The Detective, et al might also see this query and chime in with their knowledge. See what I get for all my assumptions?

You think we should move this conversation to another thread?

Anyways, I think one of my own mistaken assumptions was that a 78rpm record is also a 10."
Now I'm guessing my reasoning is flawed.

In which case, DWLP 3147 - The London Studio Group - Loony Tunes (1969) may well be a 10-inch, but not necessarily 78rpm. Or there could be more than one pressing of this record, as there were in other releases.

As an aside, you believe that finishing first is most important, Speedy Gonzales?  I'd have never guessed you were a Minute Man  :o

I've always believed it's not the size of the tool in the box, but how you work 'it.' But enough talking about how you suck in bed  ;)

Let's talk about De Wolfe!

Thanks for your helpful input, sir.

I guess all that's left to do is to wait & keep an eye out for the last De Wolfe-issued 10" 78rpm and mark the respective archives, both LMT's and those of various individuals, accordingly.

That's ok, as I got nothin' but time!
