Post by: Malcyb on January 27, 2023, 09:17:25 PM
Has anyone got the KPM LP 1051 in STEREO please? "Light Intimations IV".
It is on the website only in Mono.
Would very much appreciate this.
Many Thanks Indeed.

Hey Malcy, this was shared on the big KPM thread a while back, so try this one below...

I think that share is also mono (I'm listening to it now!). It suggests it may have only been recorded in mono.

Dear Retronic, Nidostar and Tony C.
Thank you all for your help with this, much appreciated.
The KPM sleeve does say "Stereo" but this copy does appear to have been recorded in Mono.
The plot thickens, at Discogs, see link below, you can see the artwork and the sleeve has a Sonoton Sticker on it.
Could this be a Stereo copy perhaps when Sonoton represented KPM for a short while?

I take 'stereo playable mono' to mean it's recorded in mono but can be played on stereo equipment

I might be wrong though :-)

"Stereo playable mono" means the music is in stereo, but may be played on mono equipment. So a stereo recording must exist... unless the word stereo was printed in error. Library LP sleeves often contain errors so I wouldn't be surprised.

Your theory about the Sonoton release could be right, Malcyb. I thought I'd take a listen to other KPM's released around the same time. KPMs 1050 and 1052 are both in mono. However, I instantly recognised KPM 1052 (Christmas Party) as being identical to the MFP release of the Torero Band's Tijuana Christmas. The MFP release is in stereo. So it could well be that, similarly, the original recording of 1051 was made in stereo but that KPM released it in mono. There were only a couple of FM radio stations broadcasting in stereo in the late 60s (BBC Radio 2 and 3 if I remember rightly) but all other radio stations in the UK were transmitting in mono as were all three terrestrial TV channels. So that may have been the reason for the mono release.

'Snowmans Stomp' was comped on the first Blow Up release in the mid 90's- if that's in stereo it would answer your question.

Listening to it now on headphones. It's in mono on the Blow Up compilation.

And whilst I don't consider YT as the oracle the version on there from the Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party Vol 2 is also in mono.

'Stereo playable mono', would suggest it's a mono recording playable on stereo equipment.

But then, I think we all knew that, anyway.   ;D

"Stereo playable mono" means it is stereo music which can be played on mono equipment. Many permutations of this same message may be found on almost all LP records, except Mike Oldfield's Tuibular Bells of course, which "cannot be played on old tin boxes".
