Title: Golden Book Video unknowns
Post by: kablamatic on March 18, 2023, 11:38:30 PM
Golden Book Video was the first place I started hearing library music when I was young. It was years after watching "Herbert the Timid Dragon" from "3 Mercer Mayer Stories" that I immediately recognized "Royal Entrance" by Dick Walter in another source: Spongebob Squarepants. The episode was "Sleepy Time", in which there was a scene where Spongebob enters Squidward's dream and when Spongebob first interrupts Squidward in the audience, the cue would play as the king would scold Squidward for halting his performance. And it later occurred to me that the music being used in Spongebob was also used in Golden Books' video series.

Here are a bunch of tracks I am interested in identifying from select stories from various video titles:

Updated as I've found two tracks from "The Wolf and the Kids": "The Petulant Penguin" by Dennis Farnon from Conroy BMLP 083 "Dennis Farnon's Comedy Cuts 1 & 2" (with the pitch raised up 3 semitones higher) and "Lumbering Gait" by Alec Gould from KPM 1187 "The Nature of Woodwind".

Nice, now the Emil Ascher, Inc. libraries are now a possible guess for the missing music in addition to Capitol’s Media Music which was in Scuffy the Tugboat.

Thanks, Retronic!

Update: I've just re-recorded one of the unknown "Little Toad" tracks, because the previous recording had an error sound from my laptop play while I was recording the background audio through Audacity. Plus, I've added two more unknown "Noah's Ark" tracks as they are the remainder of all the unknowns for that segment, which leaves us with six unknown tracks left to identify.

EDIT: Identified another track; this time from "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" from "Richard Scarry's Animal Nursery Tales": "Return of the Keystone Cops" by David Lindup from KPM 1039 "Light Imitations - Vol. III".

More music has been found as I looked over the Theodore Goes to Sea segment and the 3 Hugga Bunch Stories video.

ID'd the first two Noah tracks as "Passing Meadows" by Johnny Pearson from KPM 1191 "Landscapes / Things To Come / New Innovations Suite".

Also added more tracks to the folder from the stories "What Was That!", "Theodore Mouse Goes to Sea" and one from "The House That Had Enough".

NOTE: The newly added "huggabunch" cue is a more full version of the unknown cue from "Little Toad to the Rescue", minus the added trombone.

whatwasthat4 was in Prisoner Cell Block H- likely Bruton

The others you may find by searching for instrument- ie, 'accordian'
I can check a couple of catalogues over the weekend
If you have a list of the ones found so far you can share, it'll have some clues

Actually, it's from KPM 1180 "Tender Emotions"; "Helping Hands" by James Clarke. Kudos to musictheorist for identifying that one!

The missing Theodore Mouse music is likely all original synth effects. Same with those brief stings in Scuffy the Tugboat. And the Just for You guitar, all original.

Found more missing music. The solo instrument tracks are from BMLP 105 and BMLP 106. Still the missing bassoon track from Little Toad to the Rescue is unknown.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

- Relaxed Mood by Otto Sieben [BMLP 106] (Clarinet, B4)
- Adagio by Otto Sieben [BMLP 106] (Alto Flute, A7)
- Mysterious Mood by Otto Sieben [BMLP 106] (Clarinet, B3)

The Story of Jonah

- Mood by Otto Sieben [BMLP 106] (Track A14, Herdsman's Flute)

Hugs for Grandma (Hugga Bunch Story No. 3)

- Agitated Mood by Otto Sieben [BMLP 106] (Bass Clarinet, B6) (Also in Little Toad to the Rescue)
- Alla Breve by Otto Sieben [BMLP 106] (Piccolo, A9)
- Pastorale by Otto Sieben [BMLP 105]

Added new samples from the stories "The Poky Little Puppy and the Patchwork Blanket", "The Sailor Dog", "Everyone Makes Mistakes", and one from "The City Worm and the Country Worm".

EDIT: Also added more samples from "Wanted: The Great Cookie Thief" and the remaining piano cues left in "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".

EDIT 2: Added more tracks from "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" and "Polly's Pet"

EDIT 3: Added the remaining unknown tracks in "The Gingerbread Man"

Just identified "mistakes3" as "Guitar Pickin' Man" by Glenn Sutton and Lloyd Lamar Green from KPM 1117 "The Western Hemisphere Volume 1".

Also added a wav file of the last unknown track in "The Little Red Hen" from "3 Amye Rosenberg Stories".

There's a couple of 'Silent Music' LP's on KPM which might be worth checking out- stealthy villains and whatnot.

Peter2 is Long Shadows by James Clarke (Bruton)
Peter5 is from KPM 1223 - probably 'Industrious Insects'
Title: Re: Golden Book Video unknowns
Post by: kablamatic on April 21, 2023, 01:39:47 AM
Thanks, Retronic!

I have explored those Silent Movie LP's on APM's website and Bruton BRO 6 "Mad Movies" on Usample.com, and to the best of my ability, I was only able to find the ones that were in "Wanted: The Great Cookie Thief".

The other piano tracks in "Cookie Thief" and "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" could be an outside label (non-APM). Even the Piano Flourishes and Fun Links on the KPM and Bruton albums respectively could not yield any matches to what I was looking for.

Boy am I on a roll this week!

Here's some of the ones I've found so far:

From "3 Amye Rosenberg Stories":

"Country Weekend" by David Snell [Bruton BRG 24] (plays in "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" and "The Little Red Hen")
"By The River" by John Fiddy [Bruton BRE 3] (plays in "The Tale of Peter Rabbit")
"Running Along" by Neil Richardson [Bruton BRR 9] (plays in "The Little Red Hen")

From "Three Sesame Street Stories":

"Disneyland" by Brian Bennett [Themes Int'l TIM 1014] (plays in "Everyone Makes Mistakes")
"Tenderness (a)" by Alan Parker [Themes Int'l TIM 1028] (plays in "The City Worm and the Country Worm")

EDIT: I re-recorded a more cleaner sample of the remaining unknown track from "Everyone Makes Mistakes" from Three Sesame Street Stories", because it turns out that it also serves as the end credits music for "3 My Pet Monster Tales", which is where I recorded the audio on Audacity. Also added more samples to unknown cues to the wraparound segments in "Live and Learn: Never Talk to Strangers" and the last two unknowns from "Richard Scarry's Old MacDonald's Farm".

The 4th "Pokey Little Puppy" cue is "Bungling Detective" by Johnny Hawksworth, from the KPM album "Happy Families".

"pollypet3" is "Fun Ahead" by Eric Swan, also a KPM cue and on the album "Lightweight Backgrounds".

The second "Gingerbread Man" track is one I know, but I forget the name offhand.

Thanks, apmnut and lbjames! I also happened to identify "Bungling Detective" and "One Brass Velvet" respectively before I saw this post!  ;D

I've also identified the second "Polly's Pet" track as "To Tail A Thief" by Nino Nardini from that same KPM album. All that remains is one track for that story.

Now adding unknown cues for "The Gate Crashers" from "Pound Puppies Adventures".

Anytime!

Actually just managed to find the second "Gingerbread Man" cue just now - surprisingly, it's not on any of the usual libraries Golden Book Video utilized, and was originally released by Capitol Records on their "Production Music Series" LP series before finding its way on an obscure series of web-only albums by the Carlin label. The original title is unknown to me (although I've got some photos lying around on my laptop of some Loose/Cadkin reel-to-reels with track names - can't access them ATM since it's currently on the fritz), but Carlin renamed it "Alpine Fun". Bill Loose and Emil Cadkin composed it.

Eight cue from the same video is "Edelweiss Jaunt" from the same album (CPM 3), also composed by Loose/Cadkin.

Do you know where to hear those 5 albums (CPM 1,2,3,4,5)?

CPM online albums
This exclusive series of online albums features tracks originally released by EMI Photoplay, Capitol Production Music, and Sam Fox's OK Music Library. After a rights dispute was lost between William Loose's estate, the library has been digitally removed from KPM Music's Play and Universal Production Music websites.

CPM 2 - Big Band Light Activity News
CPM 3 - Panorama Idents Kitsch Jazz Travel
CPM 4 - Kitsch Beat Sitcom Comedy National
CPM 5 - Detective Jazz Tijuana Light Activity

Sorry for the late response, Retronic, but thank you once again!

For the time being, I've decided to take a break from IDing new tracks and adding more samples of unknown cues (list is getting too big!), following the addition of the four remaining unknown tracks in "David and Goliath" from Golden Bible Heroes, though I'll still look out for this thread if there are any new posts.

EDIT: Okay, maybe I'll make an exception. "noah3" is Land of Peace by Johnny Pearson from KPM 1020 "Twentieth Century Portrait".

EDIT 2: Now adding cues from 3 Hugga Bunch Stories and "The Story of Jonah", also from Golden Bible Heroes. That is all!

Back again!

"gatecrashers4" is "Froggy Trombone (2)" by Hans Erlinger from Conroy BMLP 173 "All About Brass".

I've also noticed that "puppy_remember6" is the same exact cue as "gatecrashers3", so I've deleted the former track to ensure there are no duplicate recordings of the exact same track (even if they are from different story segments).

Back again, again!

"sailordog3" is "Fruits Of The Earth" by Richard Harvey from KPM 1210 "Pictures of the Mind". And the remaining unknown track that plays in the wraparound segments of "Live and Learn: Never Talk to Strangers" is "Waters Flow" by Dick Walter from KPM 1290 "Seeds in the Wind".

Now adding one sample, courtesy of Niveithika1999/Fireburn456 of Fandom, from Richard Scarry's "The Three Little Pigs".

EDIT 5/12: "house1" is "Spring Setting" by David Snell from KPM 1199 "The Classical Harp".

It's been a while, but I've found some more tracks from "The Story of Jonah":

"Notes For Lovers", "Space Pastoral" and "Cold Planet" by Eugene Cines from KPM 1068 "The Heritage of Man / Textures for String Quintet, Keyboard, and Percussion".

Note: I've edited "jonah2" down to the third portion of the soundtrack that's unknown, because I didn't realize there were multiple tracks when I originally recorded it on Audacity.

Also identified "richardscarry_gingerbreadman6" as "Russian Folk Dance" by Georges Behar from KPM 1184 "Gemini Suite / Russian Suite".

EDIT 6/1: It seems that "sailordog2" is actually a small section of "Reach for the Stars" by Richard Harvey from KPM 1319/KPM 1 CD "Fantasia".

"Praying Mantis" by Sam Sklair (hugs_grandma5) from KPM 1223 "Small Is Beautiful"

EDIT 7/1: Also found more from "David and Goliath": "Solvent" and "Golden Harvest" by Neil Richardson from KPM 1140 "Soft Horizons". And apparently "pokey3" was "Meadowland" by David Lindup from KPM 1142 "Woodwind".

Now adding the last two tracks to "Big Bird Brings Spring to Sesame Street".

Sounds like it does come from Sesame Street to me. Don't know the episode though. I even tried looking on Whosample, but couldn't find it.

In other news, I've found another track from Richard Scarry's "The Gingerbread Man": "Squeaky Braces (e)" by Alfred Edwards from KPM 1007 "Light Imitations 2".

Now adding the remaining unknown track in "Mrs. Mooley" from Merry Mother Goose Rhymes & Stories and the last two from "Working With Words".

"jonah3" is "The Church in Taunton Vale" by William Merrick Farran from KPM 1005 "Sacred Music".
"emperor" is "Mock Baroque" by Joe Griffiths from KPM 1212 "A Child for All Ages".

EDIT: Also identified "jonah2" as "Solar Winds" by Tony Hymas from KPM 1235 "The Age of Discovery" and "david_goliath2" as "Still Waters" by Tony Kinsey from KPM 1331 "Pictures".

EDIT 2: "hugs_grandma4" turns out to be a section of "Mini Mysterioso" by Johnny Pearson from KPM 1045 "Children and Animation". And the remaining "Mrs. Mooley" track is... "Keyboard Wizzard" by Duncan Lamont from Bruton BRF 5 "Loony Tunes".

EDIT 3: "huggins_kisses2" is "Meadow Lark" by Dick Walter from KPM 1318 "The Editor's Companion 2".

Thanks!

FYI, in case anyone is wondering what's playing underneath the fourth and fifth unknown tracks in "Little Red Riding Hood", that's "The Intruder" by Alan Hawkshaw from the same album. No rush, but I'm still wondering what the main tracks play alongside it.

Just identified "pokey2" as "Feelings" by John Scott from Bruton BRJ 10 "Time and Motion/Emotions".

EDIT: Also identified two tracks by David Lindup from KPM 1055 "Dramatic Background":

-"Disquiet" (which plays in "Little Red Riding Hood" from 3 Fairy Tale Classics)

-"111 Omen" (which plays in "Hugs For Grandma" from 3 Hugga Bunch Stories)

And now...I've added the last remaining unknown tracks that play in "The Three Little Pigs" from Richard Scarry's Animal Nursery Tales! They could be from either KPM, Bruton, Standard Music Library, or Studio G.

EDIT 2: One more for "Hugs For Grandma": "International Danger" by Peter Thomas from KPM 1042 "Jazz Graphics/The Spy Set"

So musictheorist and I have identified more tracks from Standard Music Library by Sam Fonteyn respectively for "The Three Little Pigs", which come off of ESL 132 "Romantic Pastoral / Links & Bridges":

- "Hurry Hurry"
- "Perky Promenade"

- "Drunk"

Now there are only seven tracks left for that story segment.

EDIT: It turns out that "cookie2" was a section of the already identified "Top Hat and Trousers" by Trevor Bastow from Bruton BRO 6 "Mad Movies".

So finally Studio G LPSG 2004 "Animals and Children, Vol. 2" is available to listen to on Youtube via playlist of separate tracks, which means I have finally been able to identify:

"Prince Charming" by Eddie Hirst (which plays in "The Three Little Pigs" from Richard Scarry's Animal Nursery Tales)

EDIT: Also identified "City Skyline" by Philip Lane from KPM 1167 "Outdoor Life" playing in "The Gate Crashers" from Pound Puppies Adventures.

-"Happy Rag (a)" (read2 a couple semitones lower)

Now adding the remaining unknown tracks to "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" and "There's No Such Thing as a Dragon".

EDIT: Identified yet another track from "The Gingerbread Man" from Richard Scarry's Animal Nursery Tales: "County Fayre" by John Leach from KPM 1182 "Traditional Folk Music of Great Britain and France".

EDIT 2: Found the second half of the remaining unknown track that plays in "Huggins and Kisses": "Country Mellow" by Richard Harvey from KPM 1210 "Pictures In The Mind".

Having looked through Carlin CPM 001B recently, I found that a track that played twice in "Jack and the Beanstalk" from 3 Fairy Tale Classics called "Bassoon Waddle" by William Loose, Jack Cookerly, and Emil Cadkin. Does anyone know of the original Capitol Production Music Services/Ultra Music Services album it was derived from and/or the original title (if it had one)?

I've also decided to add all the remaining unknown tracks for that story segment onto my Dropbox folder (see link in my first thread post), including the CPM track in question (jack4).

EDIT: Identified "Ages Past" by Robert Cornford (david_goliath3) and "Morning has Broken" by Skaila Kanga (bigbird_spring2) from KPM 1262 "Perception" as well as "Seasons of Our Past" by Mitch Dalton and Graham De Wilde from KPM 1337 "Tradewinds" (nosuchdragon1).

Now adding the remaining unknown tracks that play in "The Ugly Duckling" and "Thumbelina" from The Ugly Duckling and Other Treasured Tales.

nosuchdragon5 - Comic Tension (a) by Dick Walter [KPM 1329] (1st part, 2nd part unknown)

Still unsure of that as it could be an entire track from a different library (possibly by the same composer).

Anyways, I've found a couple new tracks from Bruton BRG 14 "Simple Songs": "Open to Offers" by Brian Bennett (monster_fair5, school2) and "Cute" by Brian and Warren Bennett. (school3)

EDIT: With the help of the AHA Music Identifier, I was able to identify another Brian Bennett track, this time from KPM 1128 "Counterpoint in Rhythm": "Prelude and Groove Part 1" (thumbelina6). And it seems that I have left out one last one unknown track from "Get Ready For School", which I have now added to my Dropbox folder.

EDIT 2: I also found out that "Polka Continental - Short Version" (aka Polka Dotta [#63] on Carlin CPM 3 - Panorama Idents Kitsch Jazz Travel) by William Loose and Emil Cadkin plays in the Richard Scarry's Animal Nursery Tales segment, "The Gingerbread Man", albeit 5 semitones higher. Now adding the remaining unknown tracks of "Three Homes For Two Puppies" from Pound Puppies Tales Featuring The Newborns.

Plus, I've also identified the last unknown track to "Rupert the Rhinoceros" as "Footsteps (c)" by Dick Walter from KPM 1336 "Whimsy" raised 2 semitones with "Looks Like Trouble b." by Syd Dale from KPM 1018 "Tension and Suspense" following after. Not too surprising, as Golden Book Video often used the Major Records sound effects library from Valentino. Another Major Records sound effect they used as a music track is "Trumpet Fanfares No. 1" from Volume 17. They've also often used Sound Ideas's Series 1000 Sound Effects Library, and I've heard a calliope track from that library used in "My Pet Monster at the Fair" (it's the calliope track that also got used in some early "Arthur" episodes and at least one "DuckTales" episode; on the library it's called "MUSIC - THEME: 'CIRCUS' OR 'CAROUSEL', AMUSEMENT PARK, FAIR 01". They've also used some sound effects from Elektra Records's "Authentic Sound Effects" library and the Hanna-Barbera library, but those don't really have any music in them.
Title: Re: Golden Book Video unknowns
Post by: kablamatic on August 16, 2023, 04:21:22 AM
Actually, Elektra does have a few musical sound effects: three organ tracks; one for funerals and two for weddings, a parade with a marching band (which can be heard briefly in "Rupert the Rhinoceros" from Golden Jungle Tales), a couple brass fanfares, a few bugle tracks, and some tubular bell and gong sound effects.

Elektra also had a lesser known line of production music called "Dramatic Cue Music & Mood Music" and only three volumes were released around the same time they released their sound effects records.

EDIT: Found a new track from "Get Ready to Read": "Great Show on Earth" by Paul R. Ruhland from KPM 1219 "Marchtime USA / Hollywood Heyday".

While recording all the remaining unknown cues for 3 Tales From the Care Bears in Audacity last night, I noticed that the remaining unknown track that plays in "The Newborns at Camp O-Kay-Boney" from Pound Puppies Tales also plays in "The Best Prize of All" (second story from the former video title), so I've re-recorded the unknown track from the Care Bears video, because it is played out a little bit longer than in the Pound Puppies video.

Now all the cues have been uploaded. The remaining cue in "Being Brave is Best" sounds soooo familiar. I feel like I may have heard it before in either the KPM or Bruton library.

I should've waited to upload all the rest of the unknown cues before doing this, but I did identify many a few tracks from De Wolfe DWS/LP 3426 "Animated Antics" that aren't available on De Wolfe Music's website (courtesy of crt0512 from Soulseek), which play in the in-between segments of Merry Mother Goose Rhymes & Stories and are all composed by Johnny Hawksworth:

- Oops!
- Fairy Cake
- Comedy Cutouts A
- Comic Characters
- Hold That Man
- Cats and Dogs
- Blankets C

Plus, I also identified another Know the Alphabet track as "Ridin' In My Car" by Rod Argent and Robert Howes from KPM 1332 "Second Sight".

EDIT: Found some more from Get Ready For Math: "Sunny Side Up" and "Sweet and Simple" by Alan Hawkshaw from Bruton BRG 6 "Sunny Sides".

EDIT: Found even more tracks, this time from Pound Puppies Adventures: "The Worse For Wear", "The Off-beat Soldier", and "Cocky Cockney" by Ronald Hanmer. The tracks were originally released on Audio - BMP 109 "Characters In Crime / Ten Comedy Sketches" in 1965, but reissued 18 years later on the JW Music Library album, JW 502 "The Comedy Store".

Happy New Year, everyone!!! I've just discovered that "david_goliath1" is also part of the already identified "Golden Harvest" by Neil Richardson from KPM 1140 "Soft Horizons", so that takes care of the soundtrack of the second of three Golden Bible Heroes stories.

EDIT 1/2/24: 1st real ID of 2024: "Commercial (2)" by Dave Richmond from KPM 1145 "Jingles", which can be heard in Get Ready For Math.

math6 I recognise but can't remember the name - on KPM.  It will come to me.
math 5 & 8 I recognise too, esp 8.
She Ra sword 1 I have as well but again the name eludes me. I will revisit them later in the week.

Check out KPM 1209 if you haven't already- it has some of  these style tracks
SON 224 - The Little Ones has lots of harmonica tracks that made me think of this thread.  Worth checking out too.

Thanks! However, there aren't really any more harmonica tracks left to find in my Dropbox folder, so it's not worth looking there anyway. And I've also searched through KPM 1209 again. No luck either.

But because you identified "Funky Flute", I was able to identify another Get Ready For Math track from KPM 1215 "Flutes of Fancy": "Fun Flight (a)" by John Fiddy.
