[Selection Records] 6139 - Jacques Siroul – Themes (1981)
« on: July 24, 2023, 11:53:22 PM »
Hey group! Here's a rip I just did that hopefully you'll enjoy. After a phono preamp issue with my last transfer (Frank Mantis), I'm happy to say that it's all been resolved now. As always, 24bit 48khz FLACs.

Many of these tracks are ahead of its time! The use of the drum computer gives it a great "modern touch".

As always, 24bit 48khz FLACs.

But, I am soooo sorry for this, but it bugs me a bit. It's a personal issue that cost me even more reputation, but... *nghhh arrggh*
* Your audio cassette that you fondly listened to reaches 5-bit to 8-bit.
* A reel-to-reel tape can, at veeeery best and in new and in a perfect world, barely reach 13-bit.
* A CD that is superior to tape has 16-bit as we all know.

"24-bitting" a LP is upscaling by almost 100%! And it takes away so much disk space for literally "nothing". I think RetroElevelator has a few albums in his MegaAccount that are 16-bit and 24-bit and the latter one takes like 30% more memory despite containing the same audio information. Especially if the LP pressing is based on a master tape.

If you are interested or someone else not registered, here is a video of 13 minutes explaining it fantastic. (youtube.com/watch?v=cD7YFUYLpDc) The part I cite is at 10:10.
Sorry for hijacking this thread of your share that I genuinely enjoyed, but I see more and more 24-bit LPs here and maybe I can clear some things up why that is just absolute overkill.

Sorry but why don't you just downscale what you need to your needs?

I'd rather ask "why upscaling" in the first place. I thought these numbers are clear and even cited a source. Also, "My needs" sounds a bit strange; we are all humans, and 16-bit is more than sufficient to cover our hearing.

I just want to add some scientifical information to the whole matter to clear up some of the "esotheric/snake oil", uh, let's call them "theories", but of course, you can use whatever you want *shrug*

EDIT: Here is another answer from Reddit:

Quote
No [It does not make sense to record a LP to 24-bit] Vinyl can only achieve about 60 dB of dynamic range on a good day, with 16 bit PCM you can achieve 96 dB which is enough to record all the existing information of a vinyl.

24 bit will only add noise and no meaningful information.

[...]

Vinyl achieves typically 50 dB of dynamic range, maybe 60 on a good pressing. This is equivalent to 8-10 bit.
If you now rip this vinyl at 24 bit, the last 14-16 bits will only be filled randomly, with no information. This is essentially noise.

Again, no derailing, but with a forum full of vinyl records to be digitized, I thought it makes sense to bring that up. No beef intended, even though it surely does seem so :D

There are so many arguments over audio. Analogue vs digital, Bit rates / Sampling rates, PCM vs DSD, "320kb mp3s are good enough", etc... I work in the industry and this has been debated ad nauseum for way too many years. Everyone's got their own opinions, as do I, but I'm not interested in getting into it. Please feel free to avoid my vinyl rips in the future if they cause you to feel any kind of rage. Also please feel free to download any of my vinyl rips and convert them as you see fit. 😊 Peace

Agreed.

also, this is a forum and we have a section called "General Discussion".
You feel it's necessary to bring up a technical/theoretical discussion? Great, do it there, you'll have much more interlocutors and the debate will not resemble a sterile complaint about how people do a job to bring music to the audience.

Something I learned the hard way myself.
