The Mystery of ESL 123......
« on: April 28, 2019, 10:16:25 AM »
ESL 123 - Small Group Pop has an anomoly I've either never noticed or forgotten.  Either has equal chance of being true. The LP sleeve lists 8 tracks on side one, including Track 7. 'Billiards'(Pounding quick march tempo) by Herbie Flowers & Roger Coulam; it is one of 9 tracks by them on the LP.But, it's not on the record, even though it's also on the LP label.
I assume it was on an earlier release as mine is a repressed one with the colour cover.
I haven't checked on my hard drive but wondered does anyone have 'Billiards' on an old rip.  It has to have been shared at some point on one of the old boards.

Funnily enough, my copy of ESL 108 is a later pressing with the colour cover and red label, and the track 'Illicit Cargo' is missing even though it's listed on label and sleeve (it's one of my favourite Ron Grainer tracks too).  So same question for that - was it on the earlier pressing?

If you're missing out on Billiards on vinyl, it also appears on this Standard-related curio - www.discogs.com/The-Anna-Scher-Childrens-Theatre-First-Act-Drama-Kit-Music/release/8580150

Thanks, Lord Thames.  I'm going to buy that Anna Scher LP!  I think we discussed 'Illicit Cargo' before.  In case you or anyone else wants a full copy of ESL 108, here's a re-rip I did just yesterday.

Yeah, the old rip I have of ESL 123 from the Library Hunt is also missing 'Billiards', listed on the cover scan.

Thanks for 108, Retro!

Another one we've discussed before is ESL 120, which has The Loner on it, along with thematic cues by Nick Harrison.  The version that appears on the Sound Spectrum comp is missing form the release I have but same story with it listed on the sleeve and label.

My copy of ESL 120 is the original pressing with the 'musical instruments' cover, and it DOES have the Sound Spectrum version of 'The Loner' on it!

I now suspect when they brought in the 'tape reel' sleeves and re-pressed some albums they missed the odd track off here and there - I wonder why?

Thanks for the 120 rip, Retro!

I'm a bit confused, since I don't have the actual records to compare. This rip you just posted has two versions of 'The Loner' (a&b), but neither are the cool moogy version on Sound Spectrum.
So are you and LT saying that this '3rd' Sound Spectrum version is actually listed on the cover and label, maybe as a version c? Or, is that version *supposed* to be either 'a' or 'b'...

Delete the second version.  I edited it before realising and think that 'Loner Version 2' on that rip is the just the next two tracks together-- bin it.   You could replace it from Sound Spectrum.

Yes - I am now referring to my rip of my copy of ESL 120 (which I did a few years back, and isn't really good enough to share here - must do it again at some point).  The Sound Spectrum version is side 2, track 2, listed as 'The Loner - version 2'.
