Advertisements and promos from Quebec
« on: March 28, 2019, 09:54:34 PM »

Greetings from Quebec!

(Advertisements for cable operator Videotron in 1987; these are two different versions.)

(Advertisement for Videotron in 1990; there were other arrangements as well)

(2 different videos, same musical track, in 1989 and 1995 on TQS*)

(A commercial that aired on TQS* in 1989)

(Used in this demo of the Videoway interactive television system in 1991. There were four music tracks, that started at 0:00, 0:24, 1:14 and 1:32; the second one was a cover of the chorus of Birdland.)

Haha, what lovely vintage visuals!

The Dailymotion video has Maynard Ferguson's cover of "Birdland" as the second cue, followed by his cover of Bill Conti's "Rocky" theme and a brief snippet of a cover version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon" - probably also his.

Follow-up to my first post:

The theme used in the two Vidéotron ads in 1987 is similar to a melody found in Firstcom's news theme "Imminence" used by WPEC-TV. The one used in Videotron's ad in 1990 is similar to the end of Firstcom's theme "The Leader". I have also read that there were discontinued music libraries by Airforce Broadcast Services, such as The New Production Library or Power Play, but I did not find anything about them except one album.

So, is it possible that the themes that I explained in my first post:
1) were rearrangements of existing library music themes by Firstcom or any other company?; or
2) were found in the discontinued libraries from Airforce Broadcast Services or some other obscure Canadian library?; or
3) the tracks of the first three videos were actually theme music packages, similar to the "HBO Feature Movie" themes around 1980 or the TSN themes in the early 90s?
4) anything else?

In Videoway's demo, there was another theme at 1:40. Is it also a Maynard Ferguson track?

After some research, I believe that the themes used in the advertisements for Videotron in 1987 and 1990, and the first theme heard in the Videoway demo (at 0:00), were not production music themes, but were actually themes written by a television music composer from Quebec (possibly Montreal). This is just an hypothesis; we never know, there may be surprises.

"2 different videos, same musical track, in 1989 and 1995 on TQS*" is "Top Speed" by Stephane Joly from Kosinus Library - KOS 01 - Front Line (1988)
0:24 in the dailymotion link does actually sound like "Birdland" by Maynard Ferguson and I am not sure that it is a cover version.

Edit: I do have samples of Airforce Library if you wanted to search it?

Thanks for the Kosinus track, but I don't need the Airforce Library samples now.
