The Keith Prowse company originated from a partnership in 1830 between two musical instrument makers to open a shop selling their goods. It later became theatre ticket agency and a music publisher; after a merger with the Peter Maurice company it became KPM and was acquired by EMI in 1969.

Robert William Keith (1767–1846), a musical composer, instrument maker and organist at the New Jerusalem Church, Friars Street, London, opened a shop in London in the late 18th century.. In 1830 he entered a partnership with another musical instrument manufacturer and music publisher, William Prowse (1801–1886), to form Keith, Prowse & Co.

The company entered the theatre ticketing business after acquiring "Theater Ticket Messengers" a company which used young message boys to go to theatres and either hold seats or collect seat tokens for favoured clients. The first reference to the firm's selling theatre tickets appeared in an article published in 1786 in the Morning Chronicle, referring to "The New System of Ticket Agents". One of the first ticketing companies to have a telephone installed, Keith Prowse appeared in the first UK telephone directory published in 1880. In 1886, the company first represented Royal Ascot, opened the World's first flight ticket booking office at Brooklands near Weybridge, Surrey, in 1911 and soon opened another at London Aerodrome. In 1924, they first represented the Wimbledon Championships.

In 1954, Peter Cadbury borrowed £75,000 from his father to buy the Keith Prowse ticket agency, which went public in 1960, and later became a subsidiary of Westward Television. In 1955, to focus the business on the ticket agency, Keith Prowse Music Publishing was spun off and sold to the holders of the original London weekdays commercial television franchise, Associated-Rediffusion. In 1959, Associated-Rediffusion purchased the successful Peter Maurice publishing company and merged it with Keith Prowse Music Publishing to form KPM – Keith-Prowse-Maurice (often referred to incorrectly as “Keith Prowse Music”). In 1969, EMI bought Keith-Prowse-Maurice and Central Songs. KPM Music Recorded Library released many recordings of library music by composers such as Alan Hawkshaw.



APM Music has a very thorough collection of the KPM library.  These include both the KPM 1000 Grensleeves collection and the more modern KPM Main series.  I have tried to be as complete as I can with this library, collecting almost everything there is to be had.  Most are studio releases, there are a handful of vinyl rips in there somewhere.

The KPM Brownsleeves Collection

The KPM Brownsleeves collection is an archival series of albums originally done in the early to mid 1960s on 78s.  I've run across some VERY scratchy vinyl rips of these albums, but that isn't what is offered here.  These come from the APM production website and are either from the source tapes or are super cleaned up.  You would be hard pressed to find a scratch, skip or pop in these files.  I present the entire run for you in archival FLAC format.  Enjoy!

Here is a full complete version of KPM 1273. Using BWPs upload as a base I have inserted my own rip of track 11 'Pathfinders' and corrected Track 8's name from 'the last poet' to 'the last post'

Rip details - PVA cleaned Vinyl, captured at 96/24 from a sony PS-HX500 with a settled Audio Technica AT440MLb, manually de-clicked and edited in izotope's RX6 advanced including a light remaster (keeping the original dynamic range) to match the rest of the album with Ozone 7 and a slight wave arts MR noise reduction. finally conformed to 48/16 to match the rest.

The files are not damaged.  The archive itself has a recovery record included, so you can use the repair function in winrar to recover damaged information if that is the problem.  I tested these in FLAC frontend and there are no stream errors.  Maybe decode these and recode them back to FLAC, maybe that'll help your situation.  FLACs can be decoded and recoded as many times as you want without loss, that's the point of the format.

Have you tried deleting all the tag info and especially embedded pictures from the files as there maybe something in the FLAC tag info that your Sony doesn't like, I've seen an issue occur with MP3 tag info and certain libraries used to decode them that had bugs.

Lets wrap up the 1000 series.

Here are my rips of KPM 1301 and KPM 1323

Rip details - Archive Vinyl, captured at 96/24 from a sony PS-HX500 with a settled Audio Technica AT440MLb, manually de-clicked and edited in izotope's RX6 advanced including a gentle remaster with Ozone 7 and a slight wave arts MR noise reduction - with occasional RX spectral denoise at the top end. finally conformed to 48/24

Notes, KPM 1323 is noticeably bass light. It also has very eager fade outs.

Also as a bonus here are 379 KPM 1000 scanned front covers at 1400x1400 resolution, it includes all the fancy covers from 1260 upwards. I think there's probably 2 that are lower res and a couple that are made from photos rather than scans.

Just wanted to say thanks for putting Heinz Kiessling's Coloured Strings on here, as that's now gone from the KPM website - it's probably due to Extreme Music's tie-up with Brillant Musik, but the KPM recordings are much better quality than the Extreme versions.

Yes, very much so - KPM 1100 is a joint KPM/Brillant production, and has got some Werner Tautz tracks which Extreme are also now reissuing, so there could be problems with that one in the future too.

At least KPM have kept the original titles - Extreme have retitled one beautiful Johnny Pearson track as 'Swapping Spit' for reasons best known to themselves!

Just a note for everyone that KPM1094 has the naming/tagging tracks reversed for the two sides of the record, i.e. Tracks 1-6 (Johnny Pearson) should be tracks 7-12 (Tony Kinsey) and vica versa So what's marked as 01 Floresque is actually 07 Virgin Land, etc,.
Looking elsewhere on the innernet, this is a KPM mistake that dates back to a previous KPM compilation CD

I finally had the chance to go through and preview and tag every available album on this thread.  I just wanted to say thank you BlackwatchPlaid for all your efforts.  This is tremendous.  I'll be slowly going through the other threads.

Note about this is the track Convenience Shopping by Alan Hawkshaw. this seems to be the first time this was released from what I can see. Yet it was definitely used in porn loops in the 70s/80s. Wondering if it had a different name at some point.

The quality on this video is better than the mp3 I have which sounds like it came from a copy in poorer condition.

several of my favorite albums are on this label, the list is long, another day I'll leave it, Kinsey, Duprat, Baxter (the last 2 possibly with the same musicians as number of kpm is followed, but I'm sure the flutist was the same , who knows if some jazz musician may one day in a session appear the musicians of these legendary sessions in addition to others of the seal) and many others more known, please if one day you know you will need a special post

As far as I'm aware it was specially written for The World Around Us, and unreleased anywhere - it was one of the tracks I asked about when I met him for my podcast, but I don't think we found out much more than that.

I hope I'm not treading on other's toes with this, but I've recently posted my stream rips of KPM's Brownsleeves in FLAC on another forum (FFShrine) so I'll add them here. I don't have 28, 29 or 32 so if anyone can fill the gaps I'd be grateful. My soundcard (M-Audio Audiophile 2496) though old, can record streaming audio whilst still in the digital realm so these are near-perfect copies. Near perfect, as I had to chop up the tracks and tag them up as you would if doing it with vinyl.

But for 28, 29 & 32, these are the KPM Brownsleeves, from 1959 to 1967. The recordings are mono and so are the FLACs.

Actually I really don't know. People in the comments of the youtube video said that it was used for another tv program called "the magical world of Tlentifini Maarhaysuu", so maybe your right and the theme was especially created for BBC..

Just went through some KPM, Southern, Conroy, Peer, etc
Conroy has some similar sounds and the era is right.  Southern might be worth a look too.  Alot of the KPM and Bruton stuff he did is too late for this clip.

I've had a plunder through my collection too and not found anything so far. Just FYI Tlentifini Maarhaysu is a fake show from the UK comedy series Look Around You, with Peter Serafinowicz, who appears to be a fan of the use of library music (particularly KPM) in his shows.

The World Around Us theme was specially composed for the show, so not available anywhere - BBC paperwork has turned up which now appears to say it was composed by Stuart Crombie, rather than Johnny Scott (though I bet JS is the flautist).

Sounds like an interesting idea but I'm a little unclear on the detail. What exactly would be on the drive? Wouldn't there be territorial restrictions on the drive's circulation from one country/continent to another? Wouldn't it be easier to upload music to a server much as we are currently doing albeit rather sporadically?

I don’t think this is a good idea for multiple reasons which I’m not going to go through.  However, if members want multiple albums then they either purchase online or via something like Soulseek. I don’t mind posting uploading the odd album here and there but gets tedious when some members request pretty much the whole catalogue.  So, for me I’ve tended to use SS for this purpose. I can audition the albums and tracks and if it’s something I genuinely don’t like or have interest for I’ll delete. I’ve only really been a ‘completist’ for library’s including KPM, Bruton, JW, Themes and most of B&H.

I don’t like the idea of sharing a USB stick of music and posting all over the world.  I’m out on that one. As for KPM, there is a link somewhere for all the green and brown sleeve releases.

I pretty much agree with Tony here.
Although the intentions of jason are appreciable and worthy of a warm thank you, that would blow away the pleasure of hunting whether one is a completist or not.

While maybe the medium isn't the best choice, xjason's idea is sound. We're trying to create a central place to have access to items that otherwise would not be available anywhere else.

Disagree, I personally get no pleasure in hunting for things that for certain accounts, most likely don't exist anymore, and the frustration of not being able to find it.

And what happens when those albums have been discontinued and/or the library no longer exists, has no digital option, and is also not on Soulseek? All people can do looking for those then can rely on the kindness of strangers who do potentially having them to share the only option on obtaining those tracks.

I imagine most things are available- certainly KPM and I have a full run of the vinyl.  I am always happy to upload things if, as Tony says it's not 10 + LPs.
I suspect for us who are older and especially if we collected in pre-internet days we have experience where we had to be patient and it took me decades to get all these.

I remember having to hunt records by word of mouth so my first haul of 800 records was someone in a record shop telling me 'my landlord has a stash of them in his office' and then me going back and nagging to get this guys number. 
Then it was mail order- I bought Drama Montage on Bruton for £40 (a fortune back in 1996) from Haggle Records.
Early internet days I was buying loads of records and recording onto mini-disc- the first digital recording I could do and sending Mini Discs all over the world and swapping with people in places like Australia.


So I guess for me I appreciate the hunt and didn't grow up being able to get anything fast- I remember paying £16 for a Funkadelic CD from America to get one track.  Can you imagine having to wait 3 weeks to hear something now?!


I set the forum up because of loving the music and although I think it's great as well it felt a bit sad when the megathreads started where you could get everything in one swoop.  It killed a lot of discussion on here because you didn't need to ask- it became a quick request for a re-upload, which in my opinion over the years have been increasing rude and abrupt.  I can understand though that if you have always lived in a world where music is just there and easy to get you don't have an appreciation of the effort it took (me, anyway) to get it and I don't cough up to people who ask 'Anyone got this?'.  I just think, 'Yes thanks' and click on.  There's a definite lack of manners on here that I struggle to tolerate and ignoring it over the last I don't know how many years is my way of doing that.
You may notice that when asks politely I will offer.  Members are lucky that lots of other people are more generous than I am and give it to them anyway.   For me, whether you are online or stood in front of me, don't be rude.

An interesting insight from the founding father! Whilst not wanting to be dismissive of the two recent posts proposing ways to consolidate our library collections I, too, feel that it is a generational thing. I agree that you can't beat the sense of achievement when you discover an item (be it a library record or a bubble gum card - ha, remember those?) which had proven so elusive to one's collection. Though I recall a sense of emptiness and lack of purpose when I had completed the collection. It's true. It's the hunt that makes collecting so worthwhile.

Like Dr Frankenstein it must be a bit of a jolt to see one's creation take on a life of it's own. Continued frustration at the lack of courtesy shown to fellow members prompted me to put digit to keyboard recently as you will have seen. In some cases I put the abruptness of some posts down to the fact that English is not the first language of a lot of our members. Also words written innocently in a post can be misinterpreted by the reader according to their mood or the type of day they've had. But there have been other occasions when expletives have been included in posts which are totally unnecessary. Thankfully the two main culprits have since disappeared from the forum.

Retro, the problem I have when collecting and I admit it, is that it is very difficult for me to be patient.

It scares me that now the vinyls that I am starting to collect (NRE) are little by little becoming more expensive and difficult to get, imagine that in a few years they will no longer exist. That's what worries me the most and overwhelms me every time I think about expanding my collection. I could try it with more libraries, but they are expensive too.

In any case, I will try to see how I will do it and how I will be able to do it. I don't want to make too many impulsive, unfulfilling purchases.
