Title: Except vinyl and CDs, what to collect?
Post by: le_tomval on September 04, 2018, 07:28:15 AM
The question is simple. Everywhere I read only about vinyl and CDs (I think it's 99,99% of everyone collection), but what about others stuff ? Somebody said "catalogues" and tapes, but never seen any of them, does anybody have more informations ?

I have a couple of library music 78s from KPM (some are still called the KP Library) and Brulll-Harmonic, though most are also made of vinyl rather than the traditional shellac.

Depending on your definition of library music, I also have 16 inch radio transcription discs which recorded mainstream artists for standard programming library blocks. CP MacGregor did put out some early shellac 78s as well.

I’d be interested to know if any library music companies put out 8 tracks, though I’m sure there are cassettes.

There was a recent ebay listing for a Capitol Hi-Q reel to reel tape, though the lack of branded packaging suggests that it’s a generic duplicate.

Catalogues don't show up too often, unfortunately. I've seen a few Capitol Hi-"Q" reels pop up on occasion, though. 78s are very plentiful, I have about a literal half a ton. You may also find some old library software on some of the pre-internet CD releases.

What to collect, other than that? Whatever you feel like, really. Many of us collect digital files, too, for instance - heh. And knowledge!
Personally, I try to collect various pieces of library memorabilia - wherever they may show up. I have a few pieces of Italian sheet music from C.A.M. and Ariete, two cue sheets from the BBC archives, an old Italian composer catalogue, pamphlets from Cinedelic's reissue of the Ayna Records LPs - and a surely Jean-Pierre Decerf and Bernard Fèvre-approved miniKorg-700 ;)
I some library LPs were accompanied by letters addressed to the people who ordered them, or with general info about upcoming releases and such. These are cool little artifacts one can try to collect, too.

Yes, that's right ! I wanted to talk about memorabilia !
If you have pictures of that, it would be a pleasure to see them.

I recently picked up an old Kemp's Film & Television Year Book, an in-industry sort of directory for film and TV production-related services - you know, for those times you need a seamstress, helicopter pilot or pyro technician for your TV movie.
There are a few production music libraries listed in the book, and the rear cover features a neat little KPM ad urging you to literally phone up Robin Phillips himself!

Just a thought - does anyone have an overview of which library music catalogues (books, pamphlets, etc.) exist?
For those fortunate few of you who have some, which are they?

I'm positive more must exist, but a partial bibliography follows below:

Thanks for these great teasers, Mr! I'd love to find one of these catalogues. That Chappell looks especially cool.

I just wish the folks who owned these rare items were also able to SCAN the books properly. These poor camera shots don't do much for preservation or reference...
I scan books all the time, top quality, hi-res. But unfortunately, I've never gotten a hold of one of these library catalogues :(

Especially important are the release dates of the records, a lot of albums without a release date, including Media Music The Professional, GM and many other labels

Very much agree with you here. I think most people collect these as rare, cool little memorabilia, with little intention of archiving them - though they're undoubtedly important historical documents for our 'niche'.

On the subject of books and catalogues:

A lot of library composers - particularly of the early, orchestral tradition - were also academics. It makes a lot of sense, as you'd generally attend a music academy or conservatory to become a composer back in the day, taking studies in composition, musical direction, etc. As a 'consequence' of this, some of these composers also became authors, writing about music theory, composition or other related subjects.
If you google around a bit, you'll find that, in particular, King Palmer has a wide bibliography, authoring a few "How to"-books on composition and orchestration, as well as books about Bach, Beethoven and so on. A partial bibliography of his follows below:
Quote

King Palmer:
Bach (1935)
Granville Bantock (1947)
Teach Yourself to Compose Music (1947)
Beethoven (1948)
Teach Yourself Orchestration (1964)
The ABC of Music (1968)
The Piano (1972)
Orchestration (1973)
Compose Music (1974)
Music (1981)

King Palmer, Stephen Rhys:
The ABC of Church Music (1967)

King Palmer, Cossar Turfery:
The Musical Production: A Complete Guide for Amateurs (1953)
Similar books can be found authored by Reg Owen, "The Reg Owen Arranging Method" (1956) and Henry Baynton-Power "How to Compose Music" (1937).

In addition to this, there are a few autobiographies to be found:
Quote

Stelvio Cipriani, Pino Ammendola, Rosario M. Montesanti:
Stelvio Cipriani - Anonimo romano (2016)

John Fox:
My Musical World (2009)

Alan Hawkshaw:
The Champ: The Hawk Talks (2011)

Ennio Morricone:
Life Notes (2016)

Steve Race:
Musician at Large (1979)
This is by no means a conclusive list, mind - I'm sure there are more.
Adrian Kerridge's "Tape's Rolling: Take One" (2016) also deserves mention, of course.

A few more books about library music, or written by or about composers working extensively or tangentially in library:
Quote

Mike Carey:
Sailing By (2000) (a biography of Ronald Binge)

C.P. Lee, Andy Willis:
The Lost World Of Cliff Twemlow: The King of Manchester Exploitation Movies (2009)

Enzo Masetti:
La musica nel film (1950)

Jack Mirtle:
The Music of Billy May (1998)

Ennio Morricone, Sergio Miceli:
Composing for the Cinema (2013)

Valerio Mattioli:
Superonda: Storia segreta della musica italiana (2016)

Samuela Totti:
La libreria musicale privata di Antonino Riccardo Luciani (2014)

Apropos academic writing, I've been doing a deep dive into the life of David H. Kimball ("Peymont") as of late. For an individual seemingly so obscure, I've actually found quite a lot of details about him and his life, detailed in old journals and books. I found out he did some writing as well.
Recently picked this up, (look towards the bottom):

Someone on eBay is selling not only a joblot of Focus Music library CDs, but also 3 supplements: a 1992 catalogue (up to FCD 127, way back when the label was distributed in its home country by also UK-based John Fiddy Music), a blue cover CD release list (from 1998 as it's up to FCD 158) from and 2002/03 style-alike list catalogue:
